  • I think some of the frustration for me at times working in the timeline is how connected clips behave vertically. I think it’s basically because the Primary storyline does not also move vertically ( up or down) so acts like a wall if you will. Above the Primary (usually reserved for the video but not always) clips always jump up out of the way because the the Primary is locked and they don’t have any other direction to go.So if if you have 2 connected clips A and B, if you want to extend the end point of clip A, clip B jumps up vertically in exact opposite direction I want it to go because now I have to move it right or edit the in point of B back to see the new end point of A. If I want to take the in point of B and drag it left A jumps up out of the way when I would rather have it jump down out of the way. Ironically if I put those clips below the Primary (normally where the audio goes) they behave the way I normally would expect their behavior. I think it would be helpful if you could use a modifier key let’s say holding the up or down arrow as your extending a connected clip to have the clips move out of your way in the direction you want.

Ported over through the event browser in FCPX by dragging event on to raid drive so it has a different ID like you say. So it might be smarter to delete whats on portable and drag over off raid on to portable through the finder then both drives will have the same ID and the I can do as you suggested. I will not have both drives mounted when FCPX is launched.

Thanks Jeremy. That’s what I thought. I was concerned about the (id) FCPX gives to FCPX Events. I originated the event on the portable ( I started project at home) and then ported over to raid when I arrived at shop through FCPX in the event browser so I am assuming FCPX gave that Event a different (id). Media resides on both drives in there own media folders, not in the event itself. Just wanted to make sure I wasn’t going to create havoc.

For two reasons really. One is the raid is much faster and performance is much better. Working with ProRes 4444 and using a lot filters etc.. It’s where I work with the clients doing basic edit and color correction ( I have a machine room suite, small shop) and then I travel home 3 hrs away and will work out of house by phone for a week and then I might return later to finish. With FCP7 I would just save the project file and put it Drop Box, return home open project there relink media to portable and continue where Ieft off I was just wondering how one might do that in FCPX as you are continually updating in the Event Browser, I know how to do it in the project library (sequences) but not sure how to carry over changes if I work in the EB. Thanks. Hope this make sense. 🙂

Thanks Oliver and Bill . Appreciate the info. A much better understanding. I guess I thought the metadata carried through and the clips in a timeline were not independent of the Event Browser. Thanks again.

[Oliver Peters] “It appears to be interactive with the timeline clip. Meaning that if I enable Log Processing for the clip and edit that to the Project timeline, a LUT is applied to the clip in the timeline. If I uncheck that button in either location, then that setting is applied to the other. Uncheck it in the Event Browser and the clip in the Project is LogC again. Uncheck it for the clip in the Project timeline and that clip in the Event Browser appears LogC.”

Thanks all for your responses and help! Yes Oliver I understand what you are saying so why if I also color correct that same clip that I turned off the Log C processing in the EB, if I color correct in the EB (by using the open in timeline command) does that not also effect the clip that is in the timeline? Thanks again.

I guess this is where I don’t quite follow. When I am in the EB and I open a clip in the open timeline command and color correct is that not the most downstream? It changes in the EB why does it not reflect in the project that is using that range from the EB? Thanks again!

I feel it would be helpful if you could put the project library in list view like in the event library. Many times I cannot even read the names of projects if longer titles are necessary and go to filmstrip view when you want to playback or skim through. As Oliver said, waiting for things to load can get problematic. Oh and batch export would be great too.

I will indeed and I am having fun even when I don’t totally understand. 🙂
