Step one: If you sincerely are concerned about resolution and signal to noise then do not use the UVW-1800 vtr. A better choice is a PVW or the best is BVW series betacam sp studio vtr’s.
You can use 10,20,or even 24 bit video codecs but none will make up for the quality you thru away from the beginning by starting with the 1800.

Unless the soundman was a completely fool and put the mic next to the camera which is not the case in this scenario the noise issues are indeed related to the camera head.
C’mon Mike did you think he was using the on board camera mic? All qualified soundmen would place the boom mic within 18″ of the subject for a sit down interview. No such thing as a super duper telephoto mikey phone.
I highly suspect transport noise because I have encountered this issue not only with the F900 but even with older betacam camcorders.

Hire an experienced DIT who have experience with the Varicam and post production workflow.
It is money well spent instead of having to spend money in post fixing items which should have been addressed in the field.

There is but one true religion to practice to improving your mental and body fatigue.
It is simple and has been with us for hundreds if not millions of years.
Exercise.
A simple dose of exercise with as little as 10 minutes a day will boost your energy levels.’
Try taking a short walk or stretching exercise to flex your body after hours of sitting down at your edit bay.
If you don’t feel you have the time then make the time. At lunch make the first 10-15 minutes the exercise routine then go eat your lunch.
No excuses only results.

Are you in business to stay in business or underwrite your client’s projects with your sweat and labor?
You must take into account the hourly dollar value of your expertise, equipment, overhead etc to arrive at a figure which will keep you in business for the long term not just next week.
If you refuse to figure out this rate and allow yourself to be victimized by a client who considers your services to be worth next to nothing then you allowing yourself to become a slave to their insane budget.
Another option is to call around to your competition and find out how much they would charge for the job.

Speaking as a video control operator who make a living shading cameras on hundreds of multicam shoots I have to respectfully disagree with you that black skinned person would be 70-80 IRE unless you are trying to get them to look white (similar to what Michael Jackson’s skin bleaching technique). The average white newscaster’s skin is 75-80 IRE.
An average black person would be in the neighborhood of 40-55 IRE. A “film style” exposure for light skinned person is 55-65 IRE.
The most common mistake when shooting dark skinned people is to try to make them expose to make them brighter than they actually are.
I have never found black skin to have more chroma than a white person who has a tan or has a bad fever or is drunk and their faces are very red.
The trick to making dark skinned person stand out is effective lighting which separates them from the background (rim lighting, back or hair lighting, along with fill lighting).
Still photography (film) and video are different mediums with different responses in terms of dynamic range. Depending on how a video camera is set up (gamma, pedestal, blk stretch or blk gamma, knee) all these parameters will effect where the exposure can be set. So using a half stop rule may not work all the time.
The only method is to do a test shoot in advance and figure out the dynamic range of the specific video camera being used for the shoot.

This is a very complex and time consuming process because you will need to find two identical clone twins who can act on screen.
The only agency I know which can help you out is called Clones R Us. com which has a datebase of hundreds of clone twins who happen to be actors skilled at the type of work you need to do.
But the tradeoff is you will save lots of post production time not having to learn FCP, after effects, Motion, and all that other complex software. Just hire the actors and find some college kid with a mini dv camcorder and you are all set to start shooting.

It depends on what the setting has been set to in the camera.
The camera runs hot so the fan is essential to keep it cool.
Generally can be set to turn on and off in auto mode I believe.
It should not be set to off forever.
I have not had any audio issues with the fan on only when the transport motor was noisy.

Depending on where the menu for the fan is set to this would effect how loud the camera would sound.
Another item might be the actual tape transport tension issue which might cause the camera to be noisy?
