Speed is time remapping. You can also turn on the clip keyframes in the timeline and use the Speed tool (SSS). Read about FCP7 speed changes in the manual.

Those were different and desperate times, when Apple was fighting for survival. Jobs had come back from NeXT and Pixar and saw video as part of Apple’s DNA, and it was going elsewhere. Serious compositing was on the PC. Avid was threatening to go PC only. Adobe took Premiere Pro to PC only. Apple saw high end production as a way to sell high margin desktop boxes, the same impetus that made it buy KeyGrip from Macromedia and turn it into Final Cut Pro.

Times have changed. Apple’s new DNA is mobile devices.

Use Compressor to convert the MPEG-4 media to DVCPRO HD or whatever exact format and specs of the rest of your media.

I don’t understand. Could you try to write this more clearly? FCP will render what is checked on in whatever render choice you make, Render Selection, Render All, or Render Only.

Only by adding a lot of additional keyframes. You could instead, if this is the start or end of clip, apply a 0dB cross fade. That will create a straight ramp.
