Make a five frame dissolve your default transition. Put the playhead in the Timeline at the beginning of the group of clips that you want to apply the transition to. Select the shots that need the transition applied, drag the selected items from the Timeline to the Canvas to drop on Overwrite with Transition.

  • Unfortunately it doesn’t matter how we calculate the math, but how Apple does in FCP. I have no idea why they arrived at these numbers, though I heard it had something to do with scaling PSD files when going from OLRT to full res. Regardless, those are the numbers that FCP uses to make its calculations and to load the file into a DV or a CCIR601 sequence. Sounds whacked to me, but there it is.

  • The GeniusDV article is obsolete. It evens uses Windows PSD files as examples which don’t translate as layers into FCP.

  • Do not use the Adobe presets. Apple in FCP calculates the pixel aspect ratio differently from Adobe.

Cmd-F12 toggles DCD on and off.

Not as far as I know. It’s one or the other.

Just to add to what Shane wrote, iDVD will NOT accept an MPEG-2 file. It only accepts DV and HDV video material for compression to the DVD format. Set at best quality, iDVD in recent versions has been using exactly the same preset modules as Compressor to access QuickTime.

  • For DV material going to FCP start at 720×540 and resize to 720×480. For SD material start at 720×547 and resize to 720×486.

Not at all. I don’t use iTunes because I have it set for AAC, and it’s a hassle switching it back and forth. For single files I usually use QTPro. For a batch I’ll use a Compressor Droplet.
