I don’t know anything about how it works, but I returned my h4n and got a juicedlink.
I am using a ntg-2 with the juicedlink and for some reason it does not work with an unbalanced xlr cable, but works fine with a balanced one.

I had the same problem just now. I’m on Windows 7 barebones 64 bit, Sony Vaio, I have amd graphics card, I went to their website and auto detected the driver and reinstalled and that fixed the problem.

Thanks, what advantages does this have over a cheaper one, such as the zoom h1 or cheaper sony audio recorder?
Would it be better to keep this in a pocket or belt clip or to attach a lav to it for recording at the most a 5 or 10 foot radius?

Ok, thanks for the responses, I will just get an audio recorder with lav on it for now and do the extra work until I save up for the better wireless kit. I watched a few more videos where people used the cheap wireless and they all sounded too bad.

Oh sorry, I meant 5-20 feet. I have a Juicedlink preamp for my t3i, will that help if I use that as well, or will that not do much with a wireless?
So, if I don’t use phantom power, a electret condenser microphone would work the best for omnidirectional?

Ok, thanks for the info, I guess I will get a dr-40 or h4n then.

The microphone is the audio technica pro 70, I picked it up for 20 bucks on ebay. https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/352162-REG/Audio_Technica_PRO_70_Pro_70_Cardioid_Lavalier.html
“The provided UM3 power supply provides phantom power with a single 1.5V AA battery or external phantom power source. The UM3 provides a standard 3-pin XLR output connection to mixers, preamplifiers, cameras etc”

I have a phantom powered condenser mic that also uses 1 AA battery. I am debating whether to buy h1 or h4n, I am skipping the pre-amp for now, I will wait to get a beach or something later.
I could get a cable that connects xlr to 3.5 and put it in an h1 which I like a lot more because of the size and price, I can also use it for other on the go videos if I need to. Or an h4n, connecting xlr to xlr.
Is there a noticeable difference between the two? Would making xlr to 3.5 take the quality down a lot? I read something about balanced and unbalanced but I didn’t know if it would be very noticeable to tell. If it does take it down, would a xlr to balanced 3.5 make it the same as xlr to xlr or would it still be noticeably worse?
Thanks.
