Did your crew film in 29.97 or did they film in 24?

This seems to be a pretty serious bug. I’m having constant crashes when I try and export from the raw timeline, and even though the optical flow effects are only found on DJI footage, exporting from the red raw project not the proxies is totally impossible. I’ve tried trashing everything, deleting render files, deleting cache, duplicating projects, re-installing and nothing has worked. Either the project has become totally corrupted by having optical flow added, or there is a bug when working with ultra high resolution timelines because I am totally stuck. I’m having to rebuild the whole project inside Resolve – thank god for resolve here, because FCPX has left me stuck with only a proxy project able to export from. Never experienced it before, but never really had to work with optical flow in high resolution much before.

    Any more ideas at all?

Still no – but weirdly, if I highlight a clip in the main browser window and go to relink, the relink tool can’t see any clips?

Might need to do a fresh install of FCPX.

Tried all of this. Nothing works. Totally stuck and having to export master encodes from proxy files rather than the original red raw files. Seems that optical flow is not working at all, as even switching it on to one piece of DJI footage that didn’t have it before is grinding the machine to a halt. So frustrating.

Been using frame.io for the last 6 months and it’s been fantastic. Timecode comments from any invited client, you can see who has watched and when, it integrates directly into fcpx and premiere and after effects do you can export and upload with a click and even better than that, the upload speeds are better than anything we’ve used and it can take prores files for full quality project signoff. You can also upload all rushes as separate files and have multiple users on your account so that a film crew could be shooting and uploading on one side of the world while an editing team is working on the files and offering a first cut to the client to comment on in real-time. As a final bonus, you can even download the comments as either a text file or as an fcpx event which can be dragged into your project and allow you to see the comments as titles.

We’ve encountered issues with Vimeo and YouTube getting through web security and firewalls from large firms but frame.io has been brilliant fantastic.

Will be intrigued to see what happens with the new NVIDIA GPUs that Red have helped develop for 8K real-time editing. Requires an open egpu like the sonnet or a chassis based Mac/pc with pcie but looks brilliant

There’s a perfect anecdote to this inside Peter Biskind’s fantastic book – “Down and Dirty Pictures”, which looks at the history of Miramax and the independent film movement of the 80s to early 00s. Tarantino worked in a video rental store and loved it, but realised that he had to move on to follow his dream; running with the fast class and coming last was better than running in the slow class and feeling like you were winning.

Direct learning vs education courses for film making is a fascinating debate. I can’t help feeling that the chance of success for anyone is based on initiative, talent, resilience and a huge amount of good fortune.

All software and os and drivers up to date, audition just doesn’t see the ultrastudio as a video output device.

Logic and resolve/fairlight do, and even without the ultrastudio, Logic can add latency to the video signal so you can just use the hdmi output. This adds up to a large series of jobs moving from adobe to resolve.
