Thank you to everyone who responded to my post last night. Just hearing that others go through the same things, made me feel better about reading another book about design instead of a Sci-Fi Novel.

Copy others work! This I especially enjoyed, because although it sounded crass on the surface, it strikes me a good advice. When I learned to play guitar, I didn’t start out by writing my own songs!

Buy Eye Candy! This helps a lot. It might be the push I need to make that investment. It will certainly speed my work flow, and the exposure to and modification of the shells will probably help make some of the design knowledge more intuitive and unconscious. Which brings us to…

Feelings and accumulated experience! One of my favorite things about this kind of work is that it lies on the boundary of thought and feeling. You don’t know a language until you are not aware of the individual words as you use them.

Let the designers design! “i would much rather be editing than watching my half ass graphic work render.” I loved this. But unmentioned in my first post is the rush I get when I’ve had my hands in every part of a project. I have been working in a specialized part of the industry, at a specialized job function, with further specialization within that job. As I expand my abililties and clients, the frustration of not being quite so sure of myself is balanced by a feeling of freedom and growth.

First we have to decide what the other side is! Right on. I’ll embrace the feeling of uncertainty that accompanies communicating in a new language, and look forward to the day when I get on the bike and don’t think about balancing.

    Best regards,

That reflects my experience as well. Capture now worked as expected, Log and Capture gave me a subclip with black video and good audio. The file the sublcip refered to was fine.

Very glad I was doing short turn around work.

    Gary,

Wish I’d known you were at the games. For most of the sets (I worked the ALCS as well) our quarters were pretty tight, but there was room in the NCP B-Unit for visitors. Hopefully next time.

    Regards,

    Gary,

I saw this problem capturing 720p 59.97 fps video from a Panasonic 1700 deck.

ps The subclip freaked me out completely. Had to take several deep breathes before picking up the phone. All rental gear, set up quickly on site.

    Hi Robert,

I was on the other FCP system at the World Series. 5.0.2 with Kona 2.

I had the mysterious subclip with black video upon batch capture problem as well. Right-click, reveal in finder and drag the real file into browser and all was well. Not a pleasant work flow.

I talked with AJA a bit about some other issues that were solved by installing the new drivers, and I was lead to believe the subclip on batch capture problem was an issue with the Panasonic 1700 deck in particular.

Sorry I didn’t get a chance to stop by. The 16 hour days and travel got in the way somehow ;->

Drop me a line if you get a chance. I’d like to compare notes.

    Be well.

September 29, 2005 at 7:50 pm in reply to: How do I delete all transitions in one mouse click?

In another sequence create a 1 frame dissolve. Save as a favorite.

Set your default transition to this 1 frame dissolve. Select all in the sequence you want modify. Drag to the canvas and drop on “Overwrite with Transition.”

Although this doesn’t do what you wanted, it does give you cuts very quickly. Unless there is a tiny dissolve between fields? Let me know if I’m wrong.

September 4, 2005 at 4:01 am in reply to: Powerbook External Drive Recomendation…

Following up on what Chris wrote, I have been editing DV with this drive…

    https://www.macmall.com/macmall/shop/detail~dpno~194069.asp

the Firelite 80g fw800 model for about four months with no complaints. Weighs less than my wallet, powers off the bus. I bought a fw400 pcmcia card to plug the deck in for capture.

I know I’m drifting from your original question, but your explaination of why you are not using an external monitor gave me pause. I also own a G-Raid and it has also been great (for very different reasons), but I would not want to carry it around.
