    Or even easier…
Go to the pull down menu above the canvas or viewer window and change it from RGB to Alpha!

Does the cable you are using have the correct pin configurations to work as an RS-422 cable? Just because it is a 9-pin cable does not necessarily mean that the pins are in the correct positions. Try to find a proper 9-pin RS-422 cable and give that a try. The Io works very well with a Digibeta deck. I use the same configuration every day without any problems. Also make sure that you have not accidentally changed the AJA configuration in your settings. Also make sure that yoour AJA drivers are up to date and installed correctly. Also make sure that the settings in the Digibeta deck are correct. I believe that it is possible to change the serial control settings in the menu. Be sure that the deck is set up correctly as well. It’s usually a pretty bullet-proof combination and just works.

I have been using basically the same work flow. I export EDL’s from the Avid along with an Avid ALE. I take the ALE and run it through Sebsky Tools to produce an FCP batch list that I use for recapturing along with handles. Bring in the EDL’s to produce the sequence and you’re good to go. Actually pretty painless on a show that’s not heavy on effects or filters. If it a very complex show, it’s not going to work as well. I’ve used it to transfer simple projects offlined on Avid to FCP for finishing. We’ve been offlining SD on the Symphonys and onlining HD on Final Cut. How the times have changed, eh?

You don’t mention what machine you are working on, but this does seem excessively long for render and export.
Can you provide a few more details about your setup and your project?

By the way, this works in FCP6 only and not previous versions.

Pulldown the “Tools” menu from the Menu Bar.
    >Keyboard Layout>Customize
-Unlock the Layout if necessary…the little Lock icon in the lower left corner of the keyboard screen
Type in “zoom” in the search window. This will bring up all of the zoom options.
Select “Zoom in[out] on Playhead in Timeline”
On the main keyboard, select the keys you would like to perform this function. I simply used the existing Cmd- and the CMD+ since that’s what I normally use. Do this for both the zoom in and zoom out function. Save the layout and that’s it.
I normally use a Shuttle Pro II for the zoom functions and since I have mapped this key sequence to the Shuttle Pro’s Jog wheel, it will now zoom in and out based on where the playhead is located and not on a selected clip. The keys on the keyboard will do the same.

It’s a little thing to be sure, but it was one of those things that just annoyed the daylights out of me for years. Life is a little bit better now…for a Monday anyhow.

May 5, 2008 at 10:05 pm in reply to: Final Cut in the Newsroom…

Plus I don’t think that Express supports the “professional” broadcast formats, but only works with DV, HDV or AVCHD. As I read the specs, it looks like you would be limited to Firewire I/O for the system.
One of the local stations in my market here installed a couple of Final Cut systems in their newsrooms and it was disastrous. The news folk never did figure out how to run the system and in the end, they wouldn’t touch it. Of course, there was NO formal training on the systems. Instead it was “Here you go. Make news now…” They begged for the ancient Postbox to be returned instead of the Final Cut system. Both were eventually replaced with NewsCutters. Those gave the staff fits as well, but, with some training they eventually found a way to make them work.
If they install FCE systems MAKE SURE that there is someone with the patience of Job (not Jobs) to train them.
    My 2¢ worth.

    Hmmm…
That’s weird. I’m not sure just what version of Quicktime I have running on the new machine (it’s my home machine and I’m not at home right now) but I did all of the usual software updates after installing Studio 2 and I haven’t had any problems at all with Livetype and I use it quite a bit. What kind of issues are there?

I just upgraded from a Dual 2.3 G5 running FCP 5.1.4 to an Octo 2.8 running FCS Studio 2. No problems so far other than a few Leopard issues with older drivers and such. FCP seems to be behaving well without any problems so far.

May 5, 2008 at 1:33 pm in reply to: Capturing tapes vs Firestore

I don’t know how you are attaching the Firestore to your camera for recording, (Firewire, HDSDI?) but you should be able to sync the timecode without any problems. I don’t have my camera with me right now so I can’t give you the setup, but there is a menu setting in the Firestore that will set it up to slave and regen the timecode from the camera and the resulting files will have the same code as the clips on the tape. I’ve been shooting with a Firestore for almost four years now (early adopter!) and I always use the QT files from the Firestore for editing and the tapes for backup. Never had a problem yet.
Check the menu settings on the Firestore. You shouldn’t need to shoot time of day code in order to get matching code on the files. TOD code is just dangerous in many situations. Aviod it if possible.
