Keyboard Remapping; A Monday Observation
Posted by Tom Matthies on May 5, 2008 at 6:29 pmJust a quick comment for a Monday afternoon. I just remapped my Zoom function to zoom to the playhead rather than the selected clip. What a time saver! If you haven’t done it yet, give it a try. You’ll like it! It was a long time in coming.
…It’s the little things….sigh..

May 5, 2008 at 7:45 pmI like that one too. On a related note, only now did I discover that the shortcuts for auto select are now multicam shortcuts. Fortunately, there are enough open spaces with various modifier keys.
Anyone tried the FCP Keyboard in Motion? That’s a new option I just noticed too.

May 5, 2008 at 11:38 pmPulldown the “Tools” menu from the Menu Bar.
>Keyboard Layout>Customize
-Unlock the Layout if necessary…the little Lock icon in the lower left corner of the keyboard screen
Type in “zoom” in the search window. This will bring up all of the zoom options.
Select “Zoom in[out] on Playhead in Timeline”
On the main keyboard, select the keys you would like to perform this function. I simply used the existing Cmd- and the CMD+ since that’s what I normally use. Do this for both the zoom in and zoom out function. Save the layout and that’s it.
I normally use a Shuttle Pro II for the zoom functions and since I have mapped this key sequence to the Shuttle Pro’s Jog wheel, it will now zoom in and out based on where the playhead is located and not on a selected clip. The keys on the keyboard will do the same. It’s a little thing to be sure, but it was one of those things that just annoyed the daylights out of me for years. Life is a little bit better now…for a Monday anyhow.

May 5, 2008 at 11:53 pmWhy bother to make “zoom” a shifted function at all. I’ve never known another use for the + and – keys, so I just assign the “zoom” commands to them without the Command key. Many thanks for giving me a heads up about the new zooming behaviour, it’s been one of my big issues for the last six years. I’m going in first thing tomorrow and change it!!.
