Our G4 1.25DP/FCP 4.5/OS 10.3.8 system is stable as a rock. The G5 2.3DP/FCP 5.0.2/10.4 system is still a little buggy but getting better. Some operator error involved in the new system to be sure, but heading in the right direction and very usuable. Only one crash/bug noted so far.

The control panel allows you to use the Io without needing another application, like Final Cut, to control it. I use it for making dubs from one tape format to another one. For instance, I used it yesterday to make Time Code window dubs from MiniDV to a DVD recorder so a client could review the footage we shot. Once you assign the input to the Io, that signal is output thru all of the connectors, essentially making the Io into a distribution amp.
I believe that it can also enable the Io to be used as a basic frame sync for dubbing non timebase correct materials, such as VHS.
As I understand it, whenever another application, again such as FCP, is launched it “takes” control of the Io away from the control panel app. and turns it over to that application.

Simply, the Control Panel allows use of the Io as a stand alone device.

Change pan one clip the way you like it and copy it [Cmd-C].
Highlight the other clips you want to apply the pan to and paste the pan attributes [OPTION-V] onto the highlighted clips.

I had a similar experience just tonight. I was going to post a query before calling it a day, and saw this post.
In my case, I’m editing the first “real” project on the new machine-DP2.3, Tiger, FCP5.02. I was literally putting in the last effect, a fade from color, onto a Psd that was on the top layer of my sequence. Upon applying the filter, I got the orange screen of death telling me to close and reopen this window to restore. I closed the canvas window, as instructed, and when I attempted to open my sequence I was met my an “Operation not allowed” screen followed by an “Out of memory” screen. Even after rebooting the computer, it refused to open that sequence. I restored from the last version in the AS vault, rebuilt the last series of edits and all was well. After saving the project, I again attemped to reproduce the problem. I added the fade to color transition to the top, Psd layer again and BAM! the exact same crash. It does it everytime.
I never thought I’d say that I miss the stability of my old G4 and FCP4.5.
Actually, that thing almost NEVER crashed. Very stable
FCP 5 and the new G5 is still a little too buggy for my taste.
But is IS faster! Guess it’s a trade off.

If your are running the stand alone Control Panel App. and FCP at the same time…well,I’m not sure if you can do that.
I think that FCP will have “priority” over the Control Panel and they will fight each other. Try running only one or the other at a time.
At least I think I remember reading this somewhere.

If the adjustments are all the same for all the clips, just edit them into your timeline, adjust the first clip to your liking, copy the attributes (CMD-C), highlight the rest of the clips, (double right facing arrows) and paste (OPTION-V) the motion attributes into the rest of the clips. Fast ‘n easy.

I used to keep the auto save files on my startup drive…until one dark day the drive failed and I thought all was lost. That is until I discovered that I had actually set the autosave vault for that project to the media drive. Yippie! I dodged a big bullet. If I had both files on the same drive and that drive failed, everything is gone. I usually put the Autosave files right in the media drives in a folder within a project folder in the capture scratch folder. Everything seems to run just fine. I also periodically copy my entire projects folder to another drive that I use just for saving misc. stuff. This way, I always have three copies of any given project.
Loose your system drive sometime and try to rebuild a hundred or so projects and you too will make backup copies of your projects and stash them all over the place. I even copy a backup to my folder onto our network when I think of it. I haven’t lost a project since. Someday I’ll actually install that copy of Retrospect bought after the last system drive crash…someday.
