Ok so I wasn’t thinking straight last night when I typed this. What I wanted to convey was that I needed the 1/8th in. bleed but when I used .25 (NOT .125 as I mentioned) all around illustrator was not providing the proper bleed or “artboard” size. It was off by about a 1/16th. And my ruler in this particular file was not actually zeroing out where I thought it should.

Anyhow, I dumped my prefs and that didn’t work, so I then removed it from the system and re-installed it. It’s all good now.

However, about the document snapping. Is this avoidable with objects snapping to the artboard or is that just the way it’s going to be?

    Thanks,
    Tom

You know in earlier versions of Illustrator under Preferences / Files and Clipboard / AICB needed to be checked for path copying and there was a setting under Files that adjusted how the program updated its links.

Perhaps there is something along those lines in both new programs that tells which one to do what between each other? I have yet to load my license of AFX 6.5 pro on this box otherwise I could probably give you an answer.

On my other setups, I haven’t had that trouble before so at the moment that is all I can think of. Maybe some of the seasoned veterans here can chime in.

August 17, 2005 at 9:43 pm in reply to: OT: As a freelancer, should I get an accountant?

Ok so one more thing to add to this. :>)

When you are a freelancer it’s one thing. But if you have a DBA and you are making the claims as a “business” you have to make sure that your accountant understands your intentions. I can’t remember what the heck it is called at the moment (momentary brain fart) – poof! there goes another… IRS Tax code calls it I believe the “Hobby clause” or something along those lines.

The IRS in the US allows one to conduct business but you must begin to make profit after I believe it is now what – 3 years. And after that they evaluate your practice, income, losses, etc. And if you are still spending or “deducting” expenses that exceed your income after the 3 years, they consider your business a “HOBBY”. Plus certain expenses like computers or other systems that depreciate in value are typically submitted over the course of 5 years, not all at once. A good accountant that is willing to work for you and not for themselves will know the ins and outs, especially if you can find one that specializes in Entertainment, or Production.

So just something to think about when you make deductions. Because the “hobby” clause in the IRS Tax code can potentially flag you for auditing later on.

Sorry I can’t recall the title but I’m sure a search on any good business site or even the IRS site for “Sole Proprietorship”, freelance, hobby, will come up with good results.

  • It could be an IE setting on my end. Ahh! who knows… These two cinderblocks need some serious cleaning anyway, maybe there is something else deep inside the pores of their ancient civilized existance that I’m unaware of. :>)

As for your email I will send the source text like you requested to the one that is listed here at the Cow.

As always you can’t satisfy every friggin’ bloke out there like myself who says – Hey! wait a minute, this is not working, what the #$&!… :>)

  • Nope same white page with the error on the bottom…

    Tom

  • Interesting, I too have multiple id’s as you can see from this reply entry.

I don’t know how I ever created both under one email… Besides I thought I got rid of Tom, it doesn’t matter perhaps just a momentary brain-fart on my part.

    Tom J – id=582
    Tom – id=2418

So this is what I found from “Tom” who is also me, at that time :>)

    Thread:

So again I know it is WAY overkill, but I thought it may help you. As for my conclusions all I can say is perhaps it’s one the following:

Naming conventions between the old style javascript (http) link is actually different, and the new “view profile” using a _blank browser?

When the change from creativecow.net moved to forums.creativecow.net?

A cookie issue between user id’s, hence my reply here which I will check the profile after I post.

Sorry for the overkill :>) hope this helps,
    Tom

  • Ok this should be interesting. I know it’s overkill but I have a few minutes to do this, hope it helps. Remember that my system(s) for checking this are Win2k sp4 and WinXp sp2 both with IE6.

This may have been changed a loooooong time ago, but I have noticed that the new profile link the past few months envokes a totally new browser window as opposed to what I was used to with the javaScript pop-up (probably due to the pop-up killer proggy’s out there, which is cool). So with my experience here, I get the following. Please note the findings on the threads with Rick Gerard below, as the archive messages use the javaScript openResizeWin.

This first profile view is from looking at yours right here from your reply:
    https://members.cox.net/tjwebpost97/viewprofile_Eric.jpg

The error dialog is just from double clicking the “error on page” in the lower left status bar.

This one is from viewing my own profile here in this thread:
    https://members.cox.net/tjwebpost97/viewprofile_Tom_J.jpg

Same thing from one of my replies WAY back in May 2001 (I believe it was one of my 1st posts), when I click the view profile link next to my name. The all white page with just listed info shows up.

    thread:
    https://forums.creativecow.net/cgi-bin/new_read_post.cgi?forumid=2&postid=89643&archive=T

    Profile image:
    https://members.cox.net/tjwebpost97/viewprofile_Tom_J2001.jpg

Now when I go back to 2 different threads with Rick Gerard as the author, here is what comes up for his profile.

1st (read enitre thread was chosen):
    https://www.creativecow.net/forum/read_thread.php?threadid=312340&forumid=2&postid=105103314567591&archive=_2003

This Profile pop-up is what shows up on my screen:
    https://members.cox.net/tjwebpost97/viewprofile_Rick2003.jpg

then 2nd (normal thread view) from 2001:
    https://www.creativecow.net/forum/read_post.php?postid=10017308265594&forumid=2&highlight=bleeding%2Ctext&archive=_2001

    Profile image:
    https://members.cox.net/tjwebpost97/viewprofile_Rick2001.jpg

I did notice that the user id was different for each of Rick’s profiles. Hmmm. Let me try something here, I am going to search some of my old threads… Be right back…

Boy has this one come up often. I used the search engine here for “dripping text” and found the thread I was looking for dating back to 2001 by Rick Gerard.

    https://www.creativecow.net/forum/read_post.php?postid=10017308265594&forumid=2&highlight=bleeding%2Ctext&archive=_2001

    or this one as well

That will definitely get you what you’re after.

    Hi there,
Yeah the vids didn’t play on my system either, just a rendered black frame for the length of the comp.
I am on a pc with most of the standard codecs installed (at least the popular ones anyhow including Divx).

That is one nice comp, awesome use of Particular. I’m sure it could be done with a little work, but I wonder if AE’s own particle playground is up to the task???

As always you produce some really hot tutorials keep it up. It goes without saying but I will anyway, the COW-mmunity can really benefit from your talents.

    Again very nice…
