In order to utilize the mercury engine, you need an approved card (see previous reply for link). 470 is the closest to the 440. I upgraded to the 570. Picked it up for 350 or so from newegg. It was worth every penny. Renders like a hot knife through butter.

an additional question, using the fix you suggested needs to happen on the timeline. meaning i need to edit the video from the timeline.

how would i fix the audio prior to import?

i agree Gary — i’ve had a couple lockups resulting in a hard reboot rending this project.
chdsk was clean — but the 2TB external is on the way.

I slapped some random video together, rendered and exported it — just fine.
then went back to the piece in question — and it worked like a charm.
it was render files. so now i know how to actually clean them out along with the media database.
and for that — thanks for the tip.

one more quick question,
once i’ve completed my AE composition on the selected 8 seconds, can i reset the beginning and end points to render out the entire 1:34?
or would it make sense to render the comp to a particular format — then add it as a layer at the proper location on the timeline?
