You are getting hired because you are two out of the three: good, fast or cheap.
I mean the easier and cheaper tech is gonna hurt pro’s in some area’s obviously, but you also have to realize the same technology is making every company and their brother want media.

Zach,
It’s really hard to say what one is worth. As has been said every area is different. New York is different from Omaha, LA is different from Ontario. You really need to gage you’re current market along with cost of living etc. Also you got to take in effect the economy.
That being said, $35,000 sounds kind of low for your skill set especially if you’re in a major market(and working with good sized clients).
It’s hard to give solid advice in negotiations. To me it’s ultimately a game of chicken. If you stand pat on a number, they may walk away or they might ultimately cave. It’s the risk you take.
Listen you’re still young and seem to have gotten a good amount of experience and skills already. Just keep getting better everyday and NETWORK. Knowing your way around “the business” sometimes is more important than knowing your way around the Avid. Good luck!

I work in NYC. We’ve been pretty busy the last few months. We do a lot of corporate stuff(sales vids, web content, b-roll,few tv spots) Granted the budgets are little tighter but they are still spending.

Mark,
This is a tough situation. I’ll echo the others by saying unfortunately this is happening more and more in our industry due to companies trying to cut costs etc. I also agree that if possible this kind of stuff should be agreed upon before the project starts.
What I’ve seen in my experiences at places, when this comes up when an agreement hasn’t been hammered out before hand, usually the response to the client “Yes, we can get you a drive/zip/tape with the files but it will cost x amount of dollars extra”. Obviously there are risks to this depending on your standing and relationship with the client.
I’ve always found that if you honestly explain to the client your reasons for not being able to give them the files or charging them extra, most of the time a good client will understand. They are in business too and they know how the game works.
Good luck

Christmas Vacation – Hilarious from beginning to end.
A Christmas Story – Just so well done
Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer- The 1964 version with the abominable snowman and island of misfit toys. Just great story and cool old school animation

Interesting topic….I guess there is no right or wrong way…
For me usually the situation dictates the process. My preference is that if the music choice and VO is locked in early(which is rare), I’ll lay down the music and VO first. Then I’ll go through and throw in some rough add-edits on the blank video track. Then I’ll start throwing in the video.
Normally for me, VO and music is the last thing is finalized so I’ll try to get a rough pace going in my edit, but try to edit the rough cut loose enough to make it easier for me to make changes.
LOL once the producers, clients etc start making last minute changes everything gets thrown out the window anyways 🙂

lol if shakycam was in a few years ago when I first got out of college, I could of been the best cameraman in the world. Unfortunately I enjoy caffeine too much so I became an editor 🙂
