CS6 is designed to allow you to have dynamic links from clips on the Premiere Pro timeline to After Effects compositions. Its the fastest way to interactively cut a sequences then send whatever you want from the timeline to AE .

I think the Cloud is a big scam. Of course I also think leasing cars is a scam. 😀 I prefer not to continuously pay for something when I can buy it once and be done with it.

You might want to try a quick comparison.

Drop a bunch of H.264 on a timeline matched to that clip style.

Then Drop a bunch of Prores on another timeline. Compare the performance of your system.

If it handles h.264 just fine, edit it natively.

Transcoding really is not necessary with most edit systems running CS6.
For many editors they are still in the FCP comfort zone and do it reflexively. But its a habit that needs to be broken in many cases. It really depends on the power of your machine.

Andrew, one last thought. I found Richard Harringtons book really allowed me to make the transition in an informed manner. It helped me understand the way PP worked as opposed to FCP. I highly recommend it.

When you have a specific look you want, it may necessitates learning how to use the tool (AE) to make it. There are tons a presets in After Effects for text animation, but none exactly like the one you show here. If you do a Google Search for After Effects templates you will find lots. I prefer to learn how to use the software so it does what I want. 😀

Your experience cutting h.264 will be reliant on your systems ability to handle it (i.e. CPU, GPU, ram and I/O spped from media drives).

Jonathan, I recently went thru exactly the same transition you are currently experiencing.

Ben, any system I have used professionally has always had an external esata or similar type PCIE driven raid. Providing the Mercury Playback Engines what it needs to excell in performance (fast CPU/GPU/lots of ram amd fast raid system) is crucial to being happy with its performance.

With Avid you can get away with a lot less power since it is optimized to use DNxHD.

FYI, DNxHD plays nicely on my system. But I purchased it with the idea that it could handle whatever was thrown at it.

Most editors and facilities I know will create a Master file (for me on a PC thats now DNxHD). Then any dubs needed for air or clients can be quickly made from this master (like h.264 or whatever). This is especially helpful for longer form projects. Export once, then make dubs as necessary.
