Upgrade Question
Posted by Aaron Cadieux on August 10, 2012 at 2:56 pmHello,
I work as the in-house creative guy at an automotive dealership. Upon arrival, I took over for the previous creative guy who established the position. He ran the creative department on a Mac using Creative Suite Master CS5.5. Now that I’ve taken over, and now that the Mac is showing its age, I’d like to switch the dealership over to a PC workstation (because I HATE working on a Mac. HATE HATE HATE it). I want to build a new PC and upgrade to Creative Suite Master CS6. In a nutshell, can I upgrade from Creative Suite Master CS5.5 Mac version to Creative Suite Master CS6 PC version? Does Adobe allow this? If not, I don’t understand what the problem is. Thanks!

August 10, 2012 at 3:15 pmI believe that Adobe has cross-platform upgrades, but you should contact them directly and get the details from them.
As far as preferring PC over Mac, I doubt there is anyone who can help you with that. It was probably caused by a genetic defect or exposure to toxic chemicals. 😉

August 10, 2012 at 5:19 pmHi Aaron,
With CS6, Adobe has switched all upgrades to ELECTRONIC ONLY – you cannot purchase an upgrade in a box. The upside to this is that electronic (download) versions come with BOTH PC and MAC license codes! Therefore you are covered for the cross-grade situation.
Note that while you can’t purchase a boxed upgrade, you can optionally buy the “Install Media” discs for about $25. These are standard install discs, except they are not serial numbered – just plug in YOUR CS6 license key to activate. Be sure to specify Mac or PC for the install media, as the discs are platform-specific.
Thanks

August 11, 2012 at 5:18 amI believe that paying $50 per month for darn near every product that Adobe has is a great deal ($30 per month for the first year for previous version owners).
Your company might really like paying by the month instead of paying for the upgrade in a big chunk. And you can promise that you will never ever need to lay out big bucks for Adobe software every again.
And, you will also get Lightroom and Muse.
I am a big believer in the Creative Cloud (except for the name because it isn’t really cloud based at all. Not really.)

August 11, 2012 at 2:16 pmI think the Cloud is a big scam. Of course I also think leasing cars is a scam. 😀 I prefer not to continuously pay for something when I can buy it once and be done with it.

It depends on your upgrading habits, how close to the bleeding edge your cameras usually are when you buy a new one, how much money you can spend initially, and the programs you will actually use out of the collection.
For me, I had to get out the calculator, and the dates of all of the previous upgrades. I had to decide if I really needed the Master Collection – which changes the numbers considerably.
One of the reasons to buy a Suite has been eliminated. Dynamic Link works if you just have Premiere Pro and After Effects.
In any case, if the calculator says it makes sense, it is hard to argue. And in the case of many companies lately, they would rather spend a small per month fee than put out thousands up front.
Each person has different issues that must be taken into account.

August 15, 2012 at 12:01 pmPersonally, I like paying off everything in one go. I’m the guy who has never once used a credit card or written a check (just debit cards for me). However, I do understand the need to pay certain things off gradually when needed.
I’m not sure if it would be cheaper, but since Amazon sells CS6, you could get an Amazon Store Card and pay that off monthly.
