thanks I did what you said. Now I can’t figure out where the resulting mpg2 file is on my harddrive. i set the location to the folder of the project on my firewire drive…but when I click submit…and the compression takes place…all i see is the .mts file…which won’t open…shouldn’t there be an mpg2 file?

i don’t get “batch monitor” vs. “compressor”. I thought when i clicked “submit” that would be the same as “create file” or “export”… and a mpg-2 file would be the result.

hmm. help?

Jeff, thanks for the reply.

Wow, that seems like a long time to compress. I wonder if there are faster applications. I’ve played with Ulead StudioPro in the PC world and that seemed to take less time. Also, the files size (3.5GB) surprised me… I thought mpg-2 compression was supposed to greatly reduce the file size?

These mpg-2 files are going to be used NOT for a DVD but for digital video playback on a community access tv “digital video server”. I’m in the process of converting a huge library of SVHS/minidv tapes into mpg-2 files…so, obiously, I’d like to find the most efficient workflow.

So, I’ll need this to be one file with audio & video combined. when you say “creating one from scratch”- what do you mean?

So, thanks for the reply and love to hear back from you…since good, concise info on this subject is hard to come by.

Good point. Although I’m happily married with two kids…it does reinforce the notion that I spend far too much time in front of this gosh-darn thing…good thing I love what I do… and I’m able find the time to enjoy the family life (since I have a home office)

and wow, indeed, I’m proud to have been the originator of this thread (although i’m not sure why). I thought it was a simple question but apparently it raised a lot of “ire”…

As with most technology related ‘discussions’ i think it’s a classic case of “old school” thinkers versus us “newbies” (I consider myself a newbie with over 15 years of experience in the field of video production). It’s also realizing that (these days) there is no “right” answer, since there are a multitude of production workflow scenarios to consider.

uh, oh, i think I may have just opened another can of worms… you’ve got to admit I make a good point…

funny though. I like your addition to the discussion.

once again. exactimundo!. that’s precisely why i posted my original post…

i’m a huge fan of apple…some might say i’m obssessed…so, who knows, maybe the apple gods are watching and after the next FCP update, we’ll magically be able to play our stupid, little, crappy, (but, at-times, extremely important) freakin mp3 files without the ocassional cracks, pops and blips.

I think it’s really important to change with the times. Complaining about things not being the way they used to be will not help you move forward. over and out.

now that’s what I’m talkin about! I think you summed it up: “its annoying, and there is no reason for it not to work.”

thank you for presenting more real-world examples of why FCP SHOULD fully support the use of mp3s in the timeline. sheesh.

Walter (and all the other high riders),

You’ve all mentioned that mp3s should ONLY be used as offline quality. I agree. That’s why I originally brought up the whole discussion…I would like to use crappy mp3s in an offline edit. Nowhere did I ever say that I love the crappy quality of mp3s.

I never stated that mp3s are awesome quality and everyone should love them. I just think fcp should support mp3s so I could cut an offline-edit with the OFFLINE quality mp3s that the sound studio sends me for cutting the OFFLINE versions…

yowza…a lot of assuming going on her. I know people like to tout their dedication to the finest this or the finest that…but that doesn’t allow for the most efficient or martest workflow … in the reel-world…

This wasn’t supposed to be a discussion about the virtues of uncompressed audio vs. crappy mp3s… is twas supposed to address (my original question:) “why FCP hasn’t figured out how to properly render/import mp3 files”

I would expect a little more “big picture” thinking from the fine, accomplished professionals in this forum.

oh come on… get off your high horses. mp3s can sound good depending on your customized settings. of course, they are not the greatest quality but give me a break..open your minds and realize that there are plenty of instances when mp3s could be and should be “usable’ within a fcp editing situation…
