    Major part in PQ comes from the lens and so far every detachable lens has been better than any non-detachable. We’ll see if hvx200 changes this rule…

    Oops,
    but anyway like Graeme said, interframe compression usually has 1.5-2.5 factor over intraframe compression with same picture quality.
    If xdcamhd is 6-gop, then it might be closer to 1.5.
    So to have same quality as with 100Mbps dvcprohd you would need 66Mbps xdcamhd.

    None of these cameras (hvx200, xdcamhd, infinity) exist yet, so about everything here is theory.
    Is that bad?

    Maybe somebody could scientifically calculate the average picture quality of certain clip in 35Mbps 15 frames GOP 1080p30 mpeg2 compared to 100Mbps intraframe compressed dvcprohd 1080p30?
    With what factor interframe compression can do (visually) lossless compression?

    One thing for sure is that long-GOP material needs much more processing power to edit.
    Other thing might be that fine details that seems to be unchanged in intraframe compression, usually does “live” in interframe compression, because the detail level depends on the other pictures in the GOP.

    Lets remember that dvcprohd@720p24 is only 40Mbps.
    If Sony doubles the bitrate to 70Mbps, then there’s a real competitor.
    AFAIK all the decks and drives allready support this double speed.
    And I’d choose 1/2″ over 1/3″ anytime.

    It seems that over and over again it is forgotten in these comparisons that tape is both acquisition and archive. P2 is for acquisition only. So you still have to burn a dozen of optical disks per shooting day or buy $Xk data vtr or maintain a massive raid5 setup.

    AFAIK ccd’s have very linear exposure ie. straight exposure curve, unlike film, which really has usually a quite curvy curve.
    After ccd video’s curve gets curved by adding all sorts of gamma correction, knees and shoulders in the dsp.

    Sounds like 1280×720 ccd’s with pixel shift in both axis.
    If so, that’s really great, bigger pixels than Z1 or XLH1!
