    thanks Fred
please give me a little more insight to the color issues of which you speak.
I suspect you are pointing out the different color temperatures that will/or won’t be recorded in this case.
ie…3200k on the alexa could be a different looking 3200k on the 5d?
i will definitely test but I am hoping to use the 5d only for night work.
I would think it would be possible to do at least a small amount of color grading to the 5d if I need it to match.I will also more than likely be using the same glass in front of both cameras.

The Litepanel Micro is an excellent overall choice. Also check out this:

This baby has some punch. Works great as a dashboard light in a car scene as well.

    Hey raj
    Sounds like fun
I would think a black background would work but I defer to the VFX specialist.
However, you will need to throw some backlight on the drop. Position the light so you can keep it from flaring the lens
I would also throw some fill light in as well
Maybe throw a light into a piece of white card for a nice soft bounce. It should give the drop of water a nice little glow
Let us know how it goes

will be testing one of these this week for a film. but, I have been using the contourHD for a while now. It is indispensible and indestructible. good image for quick cuts

November 9, 2010 at 2:00 pm in reply to: DSLR vs. HVX (documentary work)

All good points of view. Each system shines for different reasons. I have been using the 5d on a narrative show but I have had support. Sound mixer, DIT, AC, etc. I have also been using the HVX for a doc. I have been running this myself and I have less to worry about or equipment to lug around.
But I digress, Another important thought in this decision is what is the subject of this doc and what is the profile you want to exhibit.
I remember shooting a doc on Drug free zones for the Cal. Attorney General.
We were shooting with big EFP cameras and I am surprised we didn’t get shot in some of the places we shot. If we had the ability back then to use the smaller dslr’s then I think we could have gotten more intimate footage.

So, that being said, maybe the dslr detup is less suspicious.Maybe you take the angle of a tourist on a photo adventure. Who knows, but I would keep this aspect in mind of your equipment decisions.

yes, this is indeed true. The scout can be 110 percent of your success.
As matter of fact the last show I was shooting had so many locations per episode I couldn’t get off the set to scout. So I sent my gaffer. But I also had a 40 footer with all the instruments and power I needed so I knew I could pull it off on-the-day. Nonetheless, scouting is a good thing, when you have the luxury.

But, I assumed Caleb had already scouted and he was trying to get the technical nuts and bolts of the instruments he already ordered.

mmm…math was never my strong hand. however, the 5d is incredible in low light. the other question is what is the type of diffusion. light grid, half silk, full silk, etc., what lens types do you have for the hmi’s, lots of variables. but I would assume that should be plenty of illumination for that space requirement. you will just have to setup to see.
