Precompose that section and use multiple instances of the precomposition nested in your main timeline.

That sounds like a bug with Mavericks (Mac OS X v10.9) that causes problems with various import dialog boxes when you have your view mode set to coverflow.

That setting is no longer needed. We just set it to the maximum and removed the preference. It was only useful in the distant past when computers had much less RAM and the number of undos could affect performance noticeably.

I would do my cut first in Premiere Pro to make sure that I don’t waste my time on keying and cleanup in After Effects for parts of the shots that I don’t need. Then I would import the Premiere Pro project into After Effects and do the keying work and then export from there.

Some hand-animated masks will do the trick (i.e., conventional rotoscoping). On a shot like that, it’ll be tedious but not too bad.
