    Hey again…

Not sure why this is happening, afaIk everything is set up properly. Here’s the deal:

I have a very basic setup consisting of a couple of simple figures drawn in AI, imported as comp/layer size.
The background is a large solid, rotated 90° along x to form the ground. There is a spotlight and an ambient light. The solid is set to accept lights & shadows; light is set to cast shadows; characters are set to cast shadows.

For some reason, the figures, when imported as comps (necessary for some puppet tool work yet to be done), do not cast shadows. If I import the exact same AI files as footage instead of comp and drop them into my main comp, they do cast shadows, so I know my main comp is set up correctly.

I have played around with every permutation I can think of re: collapse transformations and making layers 3d in the precomp and/or main comp. I have viewed at different scales and resolutions, including 100%/full. Nothing works.

Comps like this are nothing new to me, I have been using AE for many years and like to think I usually know what I’m doing. For whatever reasons, probably my own stupidity, I cannot solve this simple issue. Any help is greatly appreciated!

    PS: CS6/Mac, classic 3d environment
