I think that you’re missing the point. After Effects CS4 comes with mocha. The documentation for mocha is in the mocha application. You don’t have to pay for any extra training. The page that I linked to also has some links to various free video tutorials and the like.

What more are you expecting?

Here’s a paragraph from “About alpha channels and mattes” that tells what formats can contain alpha channels:

“Many file formats can include an alpha channel, including Adobe Photoshop, ElectricImage, FLV, F4V, TGA, TIFF, EPS, PDF, and Adobe Illustrator. AVI and QuickTime (saved at a bit depth of Millions Of Colors+), also can contain alpha channels, depending upon the codec (encoder) used to generate the images stored in these containers. For Adobe Illustrator EPS and PDF files, After Effects automatically converts empty areas to an alpha channel.”

Does this problem persist if you take QuickTime out of the picture? Very often, the problem is the QuickTime gamma tag. Do you have this problem when rendering and exporting to something other than a QuickTime container?

The luminance calculation is a weighted average of the color channels that approximates how you perceive brightness, while lightness is just an average of the largest and smallest channels without regard to perception.

But you didn’t mention your context. In some plug-ins and other parts of various software interfaces and descriptions, people use these terms sloppily. So, don’t rely 100% on the reality of any given context matching the academic distinction in my first paragraph.

You mean something that would apply/render/preview the effects on selected layers? No, there’s nothing like that, unless I’ve missed something big. (It could happen.)

You can do that for fonts with the mouse scroll wheel or arrow keys, though.
