  • Similar to what Michael said, see the tip on the bottom of this page:

“Photoshop Extended offers more control for creating animated GIF movies. Create your animation in After Effects, render and export to an intermediate format (such as a QuickTime movie), open the movie in Photoshop Extended, and export to animated GIF using Save For Web & Devices.”

Very, very few output formats preserve all 32 bits per channel. OpenEXR is one.

Just to be clear, though, you don’t need to output to 32bpc to get the advantages of working with 32bpc color within After Effects. I don’t know Final Cut Pro well, but I’d be surprised if there was any reason to try to get all 32 bits per channel from After Effects into FCP.

I don’t know if your problem is related to this, but I do see that you’re running After Effects CS3 (8.0.0). We’ve released two updates for After Effects CS3. The most recent one is 8.0.2. If you’re not running with the most recent update, I can’t help you. I can’t waste my time chasing down something that might be a bug that we’ve already fixed in a publicly available update.

Maltaannon’s custom effects aren’t plug-ins, and they aren’t installed like plug-ins. In fact, to be blunt, the installation process for custom effects is so cumbersome that I don’t recommend them to anyone but advanced users. Adobe never really intended for regular end users to go through this process; if people want to hack to use these, that’s great, but it’s not really a supported end-user feature.

The tutorial that accompanies this custom effect is the only place where I’ve ever seen anyone do a good job of explaining how to install them.

It’s hard for us to help when you don’t give any details, such as what kind of footage item you’re trying to interpret, what version of AFter Effects you’re using, what operating system you’re on…

Print isn’t really the medium of choice for motion graphics magazines. The Creative COW magazine is the only print magazine that I get these days.

My favorite non-print “magazine” in this area is Stash. You get a DVD with a collection of pieces (commercials, music videos, etc.) with information about who made them and how.
