I installed the Red plug-in, the r3d shows up in the file types but when I try to import the r3d file I get an error message:
After Effects error: File cannot be opened, it may be in an unsupported format 86:1

    Any ideas for a fix?

What version of AE are you running? It needs to be the most recent update.

Thanks everyone for the help. I am using the newest version of AE. It does look like I need to download all the updates from Adobe for AE to except the r3d files. I have not had the opportunity to try it but will post back with the results. I also found this post which verifies the need to update.
