Hey Zane,
I’ve too shot footage on a new HPX170 and need to export to .mov file to then be transfered to Digibeta. I captured about 24 minutes of footage as DVCPRO 50 at 30P on a 16Gb P2 card. I imported the footage into FCP using a DV50 NTSC timeline. I then tried a few exports that either don’t open outside of FCP or are too compressed for broadcast (in my opinion). Any advice to get near-RAW footage saved as .mov to then be printed to Digibeta? Here are my exports:
1) Export>Quick Time Movie>Current Settings (same as timeline I assumed) and Make Self Contained. Final file size at 9.8 Gb. This one can only open in FCP. I need something that can open as a QT .mov
2) Export>Compressor>DVCPRO50 NTSC. Final file also 9.8 Gb but looks like good Internet video but not something for broadcast.
3) Export>Quick Time Conversion. DVCPRO 50 – NTSC Best Quality, Progressive Scan mode. Dimension 623 x 464 (current). Final file also 9.8 Gb and looks as bad as #2.

I’ve decided to go with the HPX170 and invest in a Firestore FS100-160 (in addition to two 16Gb P2 cards). Can you say that the advice and processes used on your DVD on HVX200 workflow apply exactly to the HPX170? Do you reference the FS100 at all within the DVD?Thanks,
Tim

October 10, 2008 at 3:46 pm in reply to: MacBook Pro Edit workflow and Sony EX3 vs. Panasonic HPX170In reference to asking again about dumping to drive without computer, it sounds like the P2 cameras can dump directly to external hard drive without computer (OR P2 Store device).
Here’s a response the same question on a different post (FCP forum):

I have zero experience with the EX series. But P2 I know…it works with the P2 cameras.
[Tim Ryan] ” is it via a firewire cable (mini from camera) and can I select files to “save to” from a camera menu? ”
Firewire or USB…and yes, it is all done in the camera menus.
[Tim Ryan] “I read elsewhere that using a USB 2.0 external was a mistake”
Only as MEDIA drives…drives where you store the media you are editing. Perfectly fine for offloading cards and archiving data.
[Tim Ryan] ” Do you have suggestions for field hard drives (format and brand) to dump from camera to drive without computer?”
LaCie bus powered drives are good. Acomdata I have used with success. These are all bus powered drives that you can attach to the camera or computer. If you want to use firewire and have access to more power, I recommend the CalDigit Firewire VR…as it can do Raid 1 backup (mirrored backup on two drives). You can use this then as your archived storage, as the drives are removable.
I use USB bus powered drives…they get power from the computer or camera (or P2 Gear)…and hold a LOT more than a thumb drive.

I read elsewhere that using a USB 2.0 external was a mistake. Do you have suggestions for field hard drives (format and brand) to dump from camera to drive without computer? I’ve had really great luck with the G-Tech drives.
I suggested thumb drives for portability but I suppose those need to be plugged into a USB port, which contradicts my question about saving files without a computer.

I’m thinking about situations in the field where client needs copy of footage in hand. Not always going to have computer with me.

October 10, 2008 at 1:32 pm in reply to: MacBook Pro Edit workflow and Sony EX3 vs. Panasonic HPX170Thanks shane. Does this mean I’ll always need to have a computer with me to serve as the conduit to dump the footage out to an external hard drive for clients? How great would it be to transfer from camera to thumb drive bypassing computer? Same as tape I guess?

October 9, 2008 at 6:11 pm in reply to: MacBook Pro Edit workflow and Sony EX3 vs. Panasonic HPX170I just booked a job for late October and realized, in addition to not having a new camera yet, that some clients like to get the RAW footage captured during a shoot unedited. What’s the going process now for tapeless shooters who need to hand off something to say an advertising agency immediately following a shoot? Would I just convert the footage to .mov files in FCP and export to a DVD?
