  • Can’t open .mov files generated by FCP

Hello, guys. After shooting with Panasonic P2, I turned those MXF files into mov files by FCP. It seems everything is OK, but when i move the mov files to some other Macs, they can’t be opened by quicktime, even with the latest version. Just reminds me that some components are missing. Neither can i open them on PC. I have changed a lot of media players, but none of them could success. I can only open them in the original Mac where i generated them. Help. please~~~~~~

Have a look if you have the QT DVCProHD components. In Library> Quick Times.
I don’t work with this format, so I’m not sure if you get those components when you install QT.
I’m afraid that they are installed with FC. So you need FC in the MACs to open it.
The same happens with the XDCAM files. QT Pro is not enough to play them. You need FC too.
In PC, apart of QT, you need a component call “RayLight” to open them.
But please don’t trust me 100%. As I said I have no experience with DVCProHD.

It sounds like you exported the files using a FCP specific codec. To view those files on other machines you will need to ether purchase a license for FCP and instal FCP on each of those machines, or export using a codec that is not proprietary to FCP.

There are no “technical solutions” to your “artistic problems”.

yes~i think that’s the reason, because i have tried them in another Mac which is equipped with FCP, and everything is OK. Now i understand why… Thank you very much, Rafael.

    Hey Zane,
I’ve too shot footage on a new HPX170 and need to export to .mov file to then be transfered to Digibeta. I captured about 24 minutes of footage as DVCPRO 50 at 30P on a 16Gb P2 card. I imported the footage into FCP using a DV50 NTSC timeline. I then tried a few exports that either don’t open outside of FCP or are too compressed for broadcast (in my opinion). Any advice to get near-RAW footage saved as .mov to then be printed to Digibeta?

    Here are my exports:

    1) Export>Quick Time Movie>Current Settings (same as timeline I assumed) and Make Self Contained. Final file size at 9.8 Gb. This one can only open in FCP. I need something that can open as a QT .mov

    2) Export>Compressor>DVCPRO50 NTSC. Final file also 9.8 Gb but looks like good Internet video but not something for broadcast.

    3) Export>Quick Time Conversion. DVCPRO 50 – NTSC Best Quality, Progressive Scan mode. Dimension 623 x 464 (current). Final file also 9.8 Gb and looks as bad as #2.

2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo

    FCP 6.0

[Tim Ryan] ” I then tried a few exports that either don’t open outside of FCP or are too compressed for broadcast (in my opinion).”

Where are you looking at these files? If it’s Quicktime, do you have high quality enabled?
