Why would you say it isn’t “permanent”?

I’ve had mine on since I bought it…I haven’t found a situation where I thought it’s effects were a problem of any kind…

This was a known issue with CS4, but i thought they took care of it pretty quickly…are these the newest drivers available for that card?

  • Do keep in mind that PPro on the Mac side is using strictly QuickTime as it’s media “engine” or whatever…

You said you’ve captured HDV on the Mac itself and had the same issues?

Andy is correct, BTW, the computer is a little light-duty for CS4/CS5…but I’d bet doubling the RAM would make a world of difference…it won’t run like a Nehalem machine, but having enough RAM so all the apps don’t need to swap so much is a huge advantage.

Even when each 32 bit app can only use 4GB, right now when the OS is running, then Premiere Pro…then Media Encoder needs to start up another instance of Premiere Pro so it can load the sequence, and allow you to still edit in the instance you have open (provided you have the horses to do this of course)…so PPro, PPro headless (ME’s instance) and Media Encoder are all sharing what’s left after the OS gets what it needs…less than GB per application is almost certain and less than a half GB is very likely…

This is an area where Mac users have had an advantage for a while. Having a 64 bit OS opens up the maximum recognizable RAM in the machine and allows even 32 bit apps to grab all the AM they can use at least…

What type of media? HDV? AVCHD? XDcamEX? etc…

What sort of harddrive are you using. The BH spec just says it has a 1TB internal drive.

What did you add for a video RAID or what external drive assembly are you using?

Since the display card has no bearing on video playback per se…I’d be curious to know what the rest of the configuration is…and what kind of material you’re playing. Need to know RAM, processor, core count, harddrive capacity, configuration.

Display cards CAN help with effects preview (provided they’re NVIDIA CUDA cards approved for Mercury) but they have nothing to do with video decode muscle or playback speed…you need drive torque and processor muscle for that.

    “Change” from what?

What sort of material are you working with?

What kind of post workflow do you envision?

Adobe Premiere Pro CS5 is pretty good stuff, a fair slice of the upper end of the market is taking notice…but if you have to re-learn an entire editing interface, you should consider what saves the most time.

The Mercury Playback Engine is real…it works…

Like most other apps, you get a machine with the correct muscle, it’ll chew through most anything.

  • Can I assume this is in Adobe Media Encoder?

You need to furnish some detail. What format are you trying to go to… You say you tried lowering the level, but since the dialog is telling you you need to raise the level, did you try that?

I always thought that Y’IQ was a specific bit of voodoo where the 33 degree off-axis calculation along the Quadrature and Inphase axes (after inverting them) reduced bandwidth by formatting the color difference “grid” more along the lines of human visual acuity…but it was during transmission only.

To check myself, I did find a bit on Wikipedia that says that NTSC is Y’IQ, but it also says that PAL is YUV…

Y’IQ was around in the 50s and 60s…I’m not sure how things progressed. I never saw an exposed signal line up axis-inverted and 33 degrees out of phase along the Inphase and Quadrature axes on a vectorscope myself. I assume that the receiving end would have to “undo it” though…

The more I look at this stuff, the more I like serial digital…yeesh.

I’d just pile on to echo Jon’s response.

You don’t even need a “Mercury certified” display card to run DSLR, much less a video IO card from any company. You’ll need a little juice in the CPU department, but nothing extraordinary.

The DSLR media I’ve run seems to run pretty well on a variety of platforms with or without an approved CUDA card (though the CUDA is nice for the help with the effects)

    I’m not familiar with a “YUV420-RAW” file.

Of course, it would be less confusing if the industry stopped using the term “YUV” anyway… it represents a bit of scaling math inside the analog SD NTSC protocol (it’s not even in PAL SD). The worst part is that the term is applied generically to any color structure that isn’t RGB these days.

These days we have Y’PbPr or in Betacam terms, Y’R-Y, B-Y in analog land and Y’CbCr in digital. Since “YUV” does not exist in any digital form as such, it becomes just strange to see it matched with color subsample designations like “4:2:2” or “4:2:0”.

…but it persists as I’ve also seen YUV422 out there, which I think is sometimes called “uyuv”…

It’s like try to sell Apple Juice by the “peck”.
