Got more news from the original user on Microsoft’s Answers forum. I haven’t tried it yet, but probably should work.

“Go here and dload the modified atheros driver v8.0.0.316https://forums.laptopvideo2go.com/topic/15297-latest-atheros-modded-driver-for-windws-7-vista-and-winxp/ v29

Once you install this driver go to device manager/network adapters/atheros wlan card. click on it and go to the advanced tab. from there you will have more options than the stock driver.Now disable background scan to off. That is the culprit and you can stay online now. good luck to you.”

Months later I got an additional reply to a thread on Microsoft answers forum from another user having the same problem. I thought I would update this thread as well. I tested his/her temporary fix by turning off the wireless switch on the laptop and it worked. No iLink firewire cutout. It works for me in the meantime until SONY can supply a fix.

I just bought this laptop. I use i link alot for studio sound interfaces. My firewire port would stop responding in 20 sec of use. I did alot of trouble shooting and found out that the athereos wlan card causes so much latency it drops ou the i link and freezes it up. In my situation now i must turn the wirless swithch off for the i link to work.

I spoke to high level tech @ sony they concluded the same problem and were forwarding it to their engineering dept. THERE IS NO KNOWN FIX @ THIS TIME.

So try running a latency monitor to prove what i found or switch of the wrless switch if your program is compatible with cs3.

Im seriously not happy with sony @ this moment after dropp 2g on this laptop fully loaded.”

@Bob Dix: I tried those suggestions you gave and still having the problem. I’m now currently trying to install the same laptop OS (Windows 7 Home) on another partition of my desktop computer to see if it happens there. It worked fine in Windows XP. It’s a long shot but I figure I would keep eliminating things (e.g. Operating system). I also tried a new Canon MiniDV camera and used that as the analog converter via firewire to external monitor. Still same freeze on this laptop.

I also checked the sequence length. That would have been funny if that was the problem. I would have severely punished myself for that.

@Rex: I’ve tried using the clips on laptop and external HD connected via eSATA. Same issue.

One other thing I’m still excited to try is the firewire adapter card (one that isn’t the Dynex brand). Looking for one at our local ma/pa computer shop tomorrow.
