Premiere CS3 firewire issue with external monitor – only plays for 30sec-1min.
Hi guys!
I got myself a new Sony VAIO VPCF115FM laptop running Windows 7x64bit and have been testing it thoroughly to see if I want to keep it for my video/web design work. So far so good with the full CS3 suite, until this issue arose. I’ve been troubleshooting and trying to eliminate the issue for the past week. The email is a little long so please excuse me. I just want to make sure to lay out all the steps I’ve taken for a more accurate resolution.
Standard NTSC 720×480 video playing out of Premiere via firewire connected to the Sony DVMC-DA2 analog converter box and/or my old Sony Digital8 camcorder onto external monitor stops after 30 seconds to 1 minute of playing fine. It’s really strange. It captures video fine (captured about an hour of footage from both the converter box and camcorder). It plays video and edits fine on laptop when not sending out through firewire. Here’s what I’ve done to test and a few observations (my computer specs are in my signature below):
– If I click away from Premiere and onto another program (e.g. Firefox) and click back into Premiere, the video plays again, but stops after the same 30 sec. – 1 minute of video. When I say “stop,” I mean everything stops – timeline bar stops moving, audio stops, no picture on external monitor, etc. I try to get it to play again, but nothing starts, unless I click away or restart Premiere. I can do everything else in Premiere still during this time. It’s as though the firewire has temporarily disconnected.
– I’ve got default settings for everything right now, so that means “Desktop Video Display During Playback” box is unchecked, “External Device” is set to DV 29.97i (720 x 480), “Aspect Ratio Conversion” set to Hardware (If Supported), “External DeviceAudio” bullet selected, etc.
– I’ve played with most of the settings above and in Preferences, but still no luck.
– I installed a trial version of CS4 and still exact same problem.
– I took my Digital8 camcorder into Best Buy and plugged it into their store model and 2 other Asus laptop models and tested it using DVIO software (https://www.carr-engineering.com/dvio.htm) and a 5 min. clip I captured. They all reacted the same way my laptop did. Plays about 15 seconds of video before freezing with the last audio note stuck on what sounds like a song repeating a single note…haha. Through the DVIO software, it stops in the same spot on all the laptops. I, obviously, couldn’t install Premiere CS3 on all the machines so someone on another forum suggested DVIO software for quick firewire testing.
– I’ve tried another 4 pin – 4 pin firewire cable, but the video still stops.
– I tried uninstalling the “Ricoh 1394 OHCI Compliant Host Controller” driver and letting Windows reinstall after reboot, but the video still stops. I’ve tried all other drivers (legacy and all) and also nothing.
– Using Photoshop CS3 export “Video Preview” also causes problems. It shoots out the photo for the same amount of time before going blank.
– People on other forums have told me they are pretty sure it’s the firewire driver or card. Contacting Sony only led me to their 2nd tier support who said “The Hardware (e.g. Motherboard, Hard drive, Video graphic chipset, Firewire Device) used in our VAIO products are custom designed and built specifically for Sony as OEM hardware (Original Equipment Manufacturer) from various selected manufacturers.” That surely didn’t help me with looking for driver.
– Contacting Microsoft, led me to a suggestion for trying a firewire express adapter card. I tried the Dynex firewire adapter card and it didn’t even recognize my analog box or camcorder. I’ve read bad things about this adapter card so I might try a more reliable firewire manufacturer and their adapter cards. This test is to be continued until I can find a local store that carries one and has a decent return policy.
I’ll take any suggestions at this point. Much appreciated.
