I’m not a lawyer, but I suspect that such use would be similar to print use and as long as you’re not delivering the font files to the client, you’re fine to use them in production. Otherwise, how could you ever print and send a flier to clients?

If ignore the comparison and just read the caveats list, it’s not specific to BRU or subjective opinion, but rather to the shortcomings and limitations of using LTFS. We’ve invited the group at LTO.ORG (ne LTFS.ORG) to refute ANY point and we will be happy to drop that list. It’s now been 3 years and the list still stands.
And don’t get me wrong – we’re not completely against LTFS as BRU PE provides support for LTFS tape creation and management. We just want to make sure that people get the balance of both the good and bad (and LTFS.ORG is only touting the good in their marketing). It’s better to be aware of the issues and limitations listed on the caveats list ahead of time than to be caught up in a mess because you weren’t aware of them.
LTFS is great if you just need to swap some tapes, but BRU is there for long term archival by providing truly verifiable and audtiable tapes. On the other hand, so many studios, VFX shops, and post houses also use BRU that even for interchange, the story is a bit weak.

I believe that these sorts of services will only continue to grow in popularity and CatDV can make the start up investment much smaller than traditional “big iron” DAMs.
Bryson is very correct about this. And, one thing that separates CatDV from other solutions is its ability to deal with far more than just media clips.Tim

I always try to stay away from marketing responses, but I’ve been in this industry for over 28 years and LTFS is a nightmare in expensive marketing hype clothing and an invitation to unexpected data loss. I’ll just drop these links on you:

There’s a reason why BRU has been around for 27 years. Oh yes, all BRU products work great with the Tandberg Data tape solutions.

1. The new drives will NOT be the same brand as the current ones. They will be Segate drives with the same specs. Is this an issue? Here is the part number, etc:
Seagate Barracuda 3TB 3.5″ SATA3 64MB Cache OEM Hard Drive (ST3000DM001)They will work, the system should resolve any minor size differences when you re-stripe them.
2. What speed boost can I expect?
You should see the speed of this type of configuration boost by the number of spindles, so 4 drives should give you approximately 4x the speed of one drive (or basically double what you’re seeing now)
3. If I bought a 3rd drive – to make 5 in all, should I do a RAID 3 for redundancy and protection.
You should never do RAID 3 for anything (that was only useful for older, very slow drives), but setting them up as RAID 5 would offer a single drive failure protection level that you don’t get with striping.
With a 4 drive stripe on Windows 7 (Seagate Constellation 3 drives), I’m readily seeing 500MB/sec write and 550MB/sec read with media files. For even more fun, I’ve striped 6 512GB OCZ Vertex 450 SSDs and that is delivering 1.6GB/sec read and write 🙂 .

Tom is very correct in this – the only way that EOD can be at the beginning of the tape is if it was erased or if you started to overwrite the tape and then aborted the operation immediately after the tape was opened for write.
To recover data from this situation requires a special drive that is capable of ignoring the EOD marker on a tape and that is only available at HP’s facility.

Assuming that you have a capable GPU, RAM should be top priority. You really can’t have too much in today’s 64bit world.
The difference between 4GB and 8GB is astonishing, From 8GB to 16GB makes you wonder how you got by with anything less, and moving to 32GB allows you to do so much on one system that I don’t understand why any system capable of providing it comes with less than 32GB.
The next update should be a multiple-spindle disk array or a striped set of SSDs.

The YoyoMarv units aren’t really “refurbished”. They are flashed with the Mac-compatible EFI firmware. As I mentioned, we’ve now got 6 of them in our stable and have had zero issues in over a year of buying them.
Based on our tests, you will see higher performance with the Quadro 4800 for 3 reasons – it’s faster, offers more cores and has 1.8GB of RAM instead of 1GB on the 5770. We replace 2 5770’s with the YoyoMarv cards.
Oh, and the Quadro offers really great framerates in Borderlands 2 🙂 !

Just a thought, but if you’re using the Web Client to allow remote review / approval, have you considered listing it as “Remote Process Review Access” or such?

In addition to the proxy and GPU change suggestions, I would also update to 10.0.8. There were a lot of good changes after 10.0.6 and performance was high on the list.
To the GPU update, I’ve updated all of our Mac Pro systems (4,1 and 5,1) to YoyoMarv’s Mac-EFI burned Quadro 4800. Unbelievable price for excellent performance in FCP X (also works well with PP CS6 and CC when the Cuda drivers are installed). Every unit that we ordered has arrived in good condition and worked out of the box. He includes the power leads.
