Mindy – I feel bad stating the obvious, but if your “backup” can be corrupted by day to day operations, it’s not a backup.
A real backup should be copied to an alternate medium that cannot be easily modified (I strongly prefer tape, in case you haven’t picked that up). Since the catalogs aren’t huge (relatively speaking), it is a very good idea to at least copy them to a USB flash drive and keep that USB fob in a different location.

Ah – that makes sense. I’ve always worked hard with clients to insure that they were using a reasonable filesystem layout for backup operations (don’t backup what isn’t needed), so the idea of just dropping a drive is a bit alien to me.

I got Catdv thinking it was the all in program to do it from, but unfortunately I have since learnt it is not the package I expected for cataloging. I believe it will be helpful once I understand more fuller.
Would you mind sharing what about CatDV didn’t meet your needs? I ask because there are many faces to CatDV and it may simply be that you were overwhelmed by the CatDV default interface. One of the things that a CatDV consultant should do is to “trim the fat” so to speak to make sure that the interface elements offer the functionality that the client expects.
As others will admit, there are a lot of features in CatDV.

Are you running CatDV Server? Have you checked the logs for that system (everything shows in the log)?
I can’t speak to what might have happened, but I am curious as to why you are still running 10.0.1 when the current CatDV desktop version is 10.0.7?
There has been a whole lot of goodness baked into the newer versions since your 10.0.1.

I suspect that you may have a bad tape in this instance. Can you write to it with other software (NTBackup maybe)?
LTFS isn’t real helpful in reporting what went wrong and IBM will tell you not to use HP tapes.

That is the best way to arrange things. I use this method on my systems – Fusion for Apps and OS only. All other files are either on a (brand new) Samsung 840 EVO 1TB SSD via TB (mobile), or a multi-unit SAS array (3 RAID-5 boxes striped together as a single volume).
I have no issues with performance or file size.

@Dave – I agree whole-heartedly about DAM / MAM for management. However, it shouldn’t be looked at as an either-or situation. There are many existing and up and coming DAM / MAM solutions that include LTO tape archival integrated within the management workflow.
As one example, using CatDV with DAX Broadcast Archive and BRU Server allows a team to do all of the metadata management that would be expected while providing archival and off lining services as a simple mouse click within the management workflow – no IT staff required 🙂 .
