    Hi Logan,

That’s what I was afraid of. We are getting a lot of complaints and this exact set of failures with the ATTO Thunderbolt solutions – especially on newer systems. They seem to work with disk, but tape is not working properly.

For now, you can contact ATTO support and see if they have a solution.

For our customers, we have moved to the HighPoint RS6328 solution. It works great with tape (standalone and automation) and disk on Mac and provides hardware RAID for $699.

That should work, but make sure that you have the latest SAS drivers and Firmware for the ATTO HBA.

Also, what are the I/O errors you’re seeing?

Understood – sorry that we got off topic on IBM’s shipping dates.

My original post was concerning the claims versus reality of the LTO-7’s capacity and performance.

    LTO-7:
    Native Capacity = 6TB / tape
    Native Throughput = 300MB / sec

    LTO-6:
    Native Capacity = 2.5TB / tape
    Native Throughput = 160MB / sec

    LTO-5:
    Native Capacity = 1.5TB / tape
    Native Throughput = 140MB / sec

For users in the M&E space, these are the numbers that you should work with when using LTO technologies.

That article doesn’t make it more concrete, it’s just repeating IBM’s press release. I also love the way they mention that IBM has already launched several products “incorporating” the new LTO-7 tape drive. Uh, seems like an editor jumped the shark on that one since they’ve “announced”, not launched.

Don’t get me wrong – I’m totally hoping that the engineering turn arounds are going to be quick, but I always let history guide me on these things.

I just noticed this in that Library PDF:

The TS3100 and TS3200 Tape Libraries incorporate IBM Multi-Path Architecture with logical libraries equal to the number of drives installed. Ultrium 7 tape drives for the TS3100 and TS3200 Tape Libraries are only available as feature numbers.

So they’re just making the announcement of compatibility in the future.

That’s just the announcement that the libraries will be updated to support the new drive technology (you wont be able to put an LTO-7 into an existing library without a major firmware update). We’re going to have similar code updates for the HP library line up, but that means nothing until the drives are actually available.

Two additional follow-ups on this –

If you are using an older R3./H3 3Gb ATTO card, it will not work under El Capitan.

If you have a 6Gb ATTO card, you may also need to update the firmware on the card before the update to El Capitan will see your devices properly – even with the new driver.

    Hi Neil,

You’ll need to submit a feature request to the NeoFinder team. The info is there and they can pull the tape set name from the Tapes/????????????.? file that matches that archive ID. If they are willing to do it, tell them to contact Mike at TOLIS Group (they have his details) and we’ll give them what they need.

September 29, 2015 at 9:20 pm in reply to: ATTO Drivers are now available!

You have to install under 10.8.5 or earlier. When you update to 10.9 or 10.10, the driver continues to work since Apple doesn’t replace that driver like they do the H680/R680. Unfortunately, 10.11 has removed the driver when we tested updating since it’s not properly signed for the new system.

As for 12Gb SAS, unless Apple changes their bus and adds PCIe 3.0 support, you’ll not be seeing it on the Mac.

    … or https://www.tolisgroup.com/pe-argest-hardware.html :).

We’ve got everything for Thunderbolt from Standalone LTO-4 to a rack filling 48 Drive / 540 tape 1.34PB monster. And all of them work great on Mac, Linux, Windows and lots of other, more esoteric platforms.
