No – for that you would need the actual project file either the .prproj, .fcpbundle, or the like. The best solution is to ask the originating shop to provide either an EDL or an XML for your reference and use.
In many cases, they are cross compatible and where they aren’t, they can be converted.

Depending on your environment, most modern NLE’s should be able to handle whatever clip format you receive. Additionally, tools like FFmpeg (free from ffmpeg.org) can assist in moving the file that you receive to another mezzanine format that is better suited to your exact needs.

Always archive at the highest resolution that you can achieve.
Also, if you’re paying for the external company’s work, don’t you own the originals as part of the contract? If you do, I’d request the original, raw clips as well as the finished output.

Actually, it won’t be slower, because a Thunderbolt version of that drive wouldn’t be faster. A 1 or 2 spindle solution (depending on which MyBook you purchased) is only going to hit 100MB/sec or 200MB/sec maximum regardless of the interface involved.
To really see a performance difference with Thunderbolt or SAS over USB-3, you either need a solution with 4 drives (spindles) or with SSD drives.

In that old version, we were using the /var/lib hierarchy for the BRU PE environment. You will find the bru folder there containing all of the environment components on that system.

While we definitely store our business data tapes in a more responsible manner and I especially don’t promote sloppy storage practices – and Tom’s data is what the “consortium” recommends – we have seventeen DDS-1 DAT tapes dating from 1991 in our lab that we store in a Rubbermaid plastic bin in a 3 drawer storage cabinet. That makes these tapes over 25 years old and we can still restore every file from them.
The key to keep in mind is to store your long term media in a responsible manner. Don’t store them with your Blue Bunny Ice Cream or leave them on your dash in Summer (extremes of temperature), dunk them in coffee (humidity), or take them to the beach and drop them in the sand (high particulate environment), and your data will be safe for a very long time. Basically, if you can be comfortable in the environment, so can your tapes. 😉

TOLIS Group’s “ArGest IngestPRO” tool is designed to provide easy to use recovery of TAR, LTFS, and BRU formatted tapes as well as disk to disk copy. We have a specific setting for Cache-A tar tapes as well as the recognition of improperly formatted LTFS tapes that would normally fail to mount on OS X systems. IngestPRO works with any vendor’s tape drive or library.

We make 3 and keep a copy in a fireproof safe at home and then the 3rd copy in a bank safe deposit box.
If you have a bank account, a medium size safe deposit box is a really good solution for 20 to 30 tapes. If you have more, you could talk to the bank manager and see what other services they may offer.

Robin – have you disabled SIP / rootless on your El Capitan system? I just updated a 10.9.5 test system that has FCPS 2/Motion and none of the apps work due to the secure system folders.
I can see how this would work if you have disabled SIP / rootless mode on your 10.11 system, but all of the tools in FCPS are reporting errors after I upgraded that system with SIP enabled.

Thanks to Mike’s assistance and patience, we’ve uncovered what was causing our ArGest IngestPRO tool to only retrieve every other set on an Cache-A tar tape.
The new version will also properly handle incorrectly formatted LTFS tapes where no volume name was provided or where there was no serial number assigned (we still can’t determine HOW you could create such a badly formatted tape since even the 1.3 code requires both the -n and -s options for formatting a tape on all three platforms).
The 1.0.4 update for ArGest IngestPRO will be available for all users on Thursday.
