You are right – you have to use motion tracking. Unless its a steady panning motion – then it would easy to keyframe.
I can’t remember if there’s some help to get from after effects helpfile. Sorry I can’t be more precise but I’m not at a computer with after effects at the moment.

Theres the 3d Stroke plug-in from Trapcode that might do the job… but I just found this – looks interesting:

This was only a simple example to represent my speed problems 😉
Im making this running guy (https://www.knalle.dk/TEE_guy.mov)- and adjusting the speed slider gives me the same problems (he runs backwards when slowing down).
Maybe I should avoid using time in my expressions -

Just the ‘freeware feature’ gets me interested 🙂
