Thanks for your replies and sorry for not answering earlier.

Graham your post was very detailed, thanks for taking the time.

I’ve also been using the RAM preview method (Shift + B) since Vegas 9 – so it’s nothing new to me.

However, as you know one has to always wait a few seconds and the preview is gone as soon as you start working again on the timeline.

I had really hoped that with my PC I’d be able to do continuous editing with the “Best” preview, and have no lag.

What I have concluded until now:

    1) With GPU acceleration off, my processor has a load of barely 50% when editing videos.. which is strange. It’s as if it’s being choked or bottle necked by something.

    2) With GPU acceleration on, I can edit videos with “Best” as long as there is no video under it on another track. It will play just fine at 24 or 29FPS.

However, as everyone knows.. GPU acceleration is extremely unstable and badly implemented in Sony Vegas, at least for non-Quadro cards. Vegas keeps crashing every 5 minutes with GPU Acc. enabled.

Can’t seem to really find a fix for that.

Hi. Sorry to revive an old thread, but just thought I’d post here since I’ve found a fix / solution.

Just convert the video that’s giving you the error to MP4 or AVI and import it back into your project, as a substite. Then the “Error creating a proxy file for a stream” should go away 🙂

Hope that helps someone out there!

    Thanks for your reply Graham.

I’m aware that one can lower the preview quality, but I just don’t understand why I have to with such hardware. I built this computer specifically for heavy tasks, such as video editing.

I have found a “light” fix. I enabled GPU acceleration under Options > Preferences > Video, and that helped a bit. However, I tried that before and Vegas would crash on start. It is a bit more stable now and the preview is smooth with “Best”, but Vegas still crashes sometimes :

I really don’t understand what could be the problem.

    Cheers
