  • You did not specify the OS system you intend to use: Windows or Mac?
…and whether you intend to play the game directly from the said system or from another system and capture it via a capture card to the one connected to the projector. If the latter, for Windows you could check out Spout for Windows; for Mac there is Syphon. Else you would need a capture card to capture the in-coming signal to the application that is connected to the projector, and thereafter mask it/map it to fit.

To mask, the gobo method suggested will work. Holding it in place in front of the projector is one of the main problems to solve. Some clamp method (photographer’s clamp for lighting filters!) may help. There’ll be softening of the edges but the further away from the lens, the sharper will be the edges.

The alternative is software which has built-in masking features, or the ability to play multiple layered tracks (a’la photoshop layers) such that the mask can be on a higher layer masking out parts of the layers below. Check out vj software such as Resolume, Module 8, MWM, Millenium, LPMT, GrandVJ, etc. For just straight geometric adjustment to fit your trapezoid without masking, all the above-mentioned software plus TabulaSignage, and Painting With Light from https://pwl.bigfug.com

    Good luck!

  • I’ll chip to say Joe is correct. You must liaise with the people supplying the playback system to discover their specific requirements.

Another aspect you have not yet considered is to take into account the bezel of the 55″ TVs. When there are 2 side-by-side, this is x2 bezel widths to consider, where the images will never be shown. Depending on the bezel width per set, you may have to allow 200-500 pixels for each, which increases the width of your Master comp. Only the supplier of the sets would know.

I suggest you get a free loan of at least 2 of those 55″ sets to do short test renders and playback on them in order to determine the bezel width to allow for. These tests would also give you a better idea of how to next proceed towards the delivery.

As for output, I think the procedure should be, for each output of 1920×1080, in the Render settings, specify a crop of the left and right sides off the Master Comp. You could use a spreadsheet to work out the exact crop for each comp so you could desk-check the settings before entering into the Render windows. Then let it render all.

    my 2 cents,

Here’s a shot in the dark: AE defaults to a comp of 10 secs unless otherwise specified. So check your Comp duration settings.

    Try vlc from vlc.org

Has loop, random playback. Watch folder is the Playlist which you can have displayed on a second monitor. Use Windows Explorer to select/drag n drop videos onto the playlist. Only problem is the Play controls, when disconnected from the fullscreen video playing and dragged to the second monitor keeps disappearing after a few secs. To bring it back, just drag the mouse to the fullscreen video monitor – use the corner to get the mouse barely visible.

    Hi Mark,

Not sure if you have had any success from my friend in London, but I just came across this other possible source –

    https://www.wayfair.com/Vutec-Mirror-For-Rear-Projection-VU1165.html?

Might be worth a question to them re the mirror only.

Apparently such sizes are available from England!! My ole buddy there just replied me, saying:

“Front surface glass mirrors that big are available but Mylar mirrors (foil stretched on aluminium frame) are more practical and cheaper., and more popular. I can get a quote for you on Monday.”

If interested, I’ve already informed him that you will contact him. Please email me or private message me here for his contact email.

My thoughts on this is that a normal mirror is merely a piece of plate glass coated on one side with silver and the opposite side with something opaque (eg. paint). The technique says that removal of the paint would suffice. The original coating on the reflective mirror side would be untouched.

Could try it out on a smaller piece first. Can check for ghosting with the tip of a pencil or finger tip on the surface. The ghost image comes from the back surface if the front surface is not good enough (That’s the way I check my prompter glass before mounting on the stand).

Alternative is DIY/modify a normal mirror with paint strippers!! Examples –

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=RSBBjzttfzo

At 40″, any piece you get would probably have to be thicker than the usual 2-3mm, else it sags/bends when angled and may break if too thin and brittle.
Additionally, at that size (like a 10ft x 8ft piece I had years ago for a Pepper’s Ghost install), it would also have to be ??laminated?? (can’t recall the proper word) so when and if it breaks, it does not shatter completely and into small flying fragments causing a danger to anyone nearby.

Inquire with Edmund Optics. They may do custom orders –

    https://www.edmundoptics.com/optics/beamsplitters/

I have no experience with them, but they were in my ‘collection of websites’ for future reference.

    Good luck!

You could have a look at this display port hub from EVGA –
    https://www.evga.com/Products/Product.aspx?pn=200-DP-1301-L1

Amazon carries it. Read the reviews there. Might not work with a Mac.

    good luck,
