I have client permission to post images where you can see the artifacts. Some are of a woman’s head, her bun is neat but the artifacts look like she stuck her finger in a lamp socket. The others are ‘ghost’ images of her arm.

My hope is that seeing these images might help determine why the artifacts are happening.

    thanks

<font face=”verdana, sans-serif”>Guys, thanks for your help. I’m able to do this same transition using the same footage in Resolve )”smooth cuts”) with no issue whatsoever. Could it be that FCP, while transcoding the footage from Sony XAVC, is corrupting the file?</font>

I was able to use Resolve to easily morph frames from one shot to the next without any issue, using the same footage my client was wrestling with using FCP.

Do you think the length of the flow transition might affect the artifacts? If a 24-frame transition was used instead of a 4 frame transition, do you think that would help?

Guys, thanks for your help. Do you think the issue could be in trans-coding Sony XAVC footage into FCP?

Guys, thanks for your thoughts. I wonder if there’s an issue trans-coding Sony XAVC footage into FCP that may be the problem. Any thoughts on this?

Yes, the XAVC-I footage from a Sony A7s3 was transcoded prior to making the flow transition.

i also shot footage in ProRes by taking the HDMI output of the Sony A7s3 camera and using an Atomos Shogun to record. Still had the same issue with artifacts in the output file.

I’m not allowed to post any of the video, but the artifacts appear like ‘ghost’ images. By that I mean, during the flow transition, I can see my subject standing in front of a black background. During the transition I can see the side of the subject’s head as a pale, partial image. This artifact appears to the left of the person’s head. Another subject, a woman with her hair in a bun, had the artifact clustered around the bun.

    Apparently the problem is intermittent.

    thanks

    Hi Patrick

Yes, the artifacts are in the output file. We are using the flow transition.

    thanks

    Hi Eric

Yes, the footage was transcoded from XAVC to ProRes before creating the flow transition.

Since my first post, we tried increasing the bit-depth of the footage from 8- to 1-bit, and also tried recording the HDMI output of the Sony A7s3 in ProRes using a Shogun recorder, but these weird artifacts keep appearing.

An editor friend of mine suggested it was a FCP problem, and that FCP was ‘late to the party’ when it comes to this type of effect.

BTW I had no trouble whatsoever creating this type of transition in Resolve (where it’s called a ‘smooth cut’).

    thanks for your help!

    Hi Patrick

Yes, the artifacts are in the output file, and yes, using the ‘flow transition’ effect to join clips together.

    thanks for your help.

    Hi Glenn,

Thanks so much for your email, I began going down the list of your suggestions when it occurred to me to try re-importing the audio clip. I did this and was able to proceed. I have no idea what I did to silence the track, but will try to find out in the days coming up.

    thanks again,
