April 17, 2019 at 10:05 pm in reply to: Can we still get DR 15?

As an ignoramus I didn’t back up my version 15 files and 16 at the moment will not run. So I guess I am stuck is that correct?

  • I have been unable to find the location where I can select the version of Resolve. Going through the web site I was given only the version 16 option. I have installed it twice just in case I had made a mistake. However when I click on the icon for the programme I get the start up image which vanishes after 15 seconds or so , and nothing appears afterward even if I go away an leave it. Can you point me to the option to choose version 15 please
Thanks For your help. Version 15 was running fine with .mov files

  • I looked into my windows 10 update to find that there had been a failed attempt which I have now corrected. So perhaps this was part of the problem with the failure to delete Da Vinci 16

  • Thanks for your comment. I had been trying unsuccessfully to remove Da Vinci. But it wouldn’t uninstall. I saw that it was muddled with DVD architect when I was trying to install and just died. I therefore started by trying to uninstall DVD architect and saw the following do you want fffmsi to make changes to your system. I typed no and then found the start up screen for Da Vinci briefly and after that I was still in the uninstall programme for DVD Architect. but noticed that the DaVinci Resolve had gone. It might be my machine has some problem but thought I should report it.
I will try installing 15.3 now

March 27, 2019 at 5:10 am in reply to: Does Da Vinci Like M2T Videos?

Hi Ole this is a final follow up to all of your very helpful posts. I found that I could use ER Media toolkit to transcode my DNxHD.mx movies to DNxHD.mov This was a lot less work for me . The output was easily compatible with Da Vinci as you predicted. Then after a lot of talking to George who said I should look around to find the best delivery wrapper. I looked at DaVinci which has lots of Mp4 options I decided to go to the Master option with best quality. That has been going well and I am now back in the editing business. A comparison between the DNxHd original and the final master was really satisfactory for my work. So I am planning to save the large DNxHD on an external big HD for archiving and the same for the smaller M2s on a separate USB HD. The master MP4 will be the public version. Thus you and George have guided me through this maze to what I think will be a successful conclusion after a few months of editing. So thanks very much indeed for your patience and great ideas. I am really grateful

  • Well I have too many USB drives lying around all without the size needed to handle this quantity of data. That has contributed to my problem as I have now been organising some 50,000 photos not including pre digital as well as various types of video and film going all the way back to 8.mm I thought that a 6 bay NAS with 6X !0 Terabyte hard drives would be adequate. That gave me 30 Tb but my 3 Terabytes of m2t overwhelmed that and I now have an * 8Terabyt USB drive that is also full. My Nas has the capability to switch to apple and a thunderbolt drive if necessary or a 10 gigabit/sec Ethernet, however I am doing OK with the old standard 1.0 Gigabit/sec so far. But I am not sharing.
If I need to double my NAS size I will be forced to purchase a satellite NAS which can be configured to add on. I did not want to purchase 10 Tb drives as they are expensive but had opted for the 6 bay system which was a mistake as I now find.

  • HI Thanks for your reply. I am in the same boat except a bit older but with the similar ideas. My purpose has been to leave a good record of family life for my grandchildren. I guess my appreciation of the beauty of an image forces me into getting the best quality rather than than just what is is necessary. That is why I switched to HD back in 2006 and UHD in 2015 when reasonably priced reliable equipment became available. I am forking out for data centre quality HD with 5 year warranties which I hope will give longer trouble free service for everyone plus a commercial quality RAID 6 NAS which should give prediction of disc failure (I hope) However I am thinking that this is more useful for the final product and perhaps storing the larger masters on large standard USB drives would suffice for the back up. (Just in case anyone wants to re edit the data.) My son in law said that PNG is a lossless compression which he uses and says that it works for videos too, I looked it up and there was a reference to that though it is not as small as MP4. Streaming would be nice for family members though I would not like to sacrifice the quality for that.
I will do as you recommend and will play around before deciding. However I do not know what bit rate I should select for HD and UHD what do you use? Could you tell me how many Terabytes you use for your system especially for UHD and is all of that with reduntant RAiD support
    Thanks for your guidance

  • Thanks for this help and advice. I have just been testing Ole’ s suggestion which was to use DNxHD.mov it didn’t reduce the file size but gave a beautiful coloration of waves stirring up the sand with a lot of texture of the colour. Is that only available with bigger formats or if compressed to MP4 will it still be visible? If I need to stay with the bigger format during editing, maybe I should invest in more disk space?? and in the interim have several 8 TB USB drives holding the masters. These videos were taken on a camera I am no longer using, having switched to a Panasonic 4K which I am using at this time. Everyone told me that I should capture the data directly as DNxHR which is thus hanging over me. I cannot think what storage space I will need. I thought 60 Tb in a RAID configuration was overreaching but it is evidently insufficient. It seems that perhaps having it all in RAID is unneccessary though. Is there any risk of deterioration (apart from fire and magnetic pulses from some A bomb ) from having the masters on 8 TB USB drives?
    Thanks

  • Thanks George for all of your help. I will send my clip to you after replying to your latest note. I had been thinking of changing to mp4 but was convinced by Ole and others that it would be better to go to a codec (If that is the right word) which would allow better quality processing by Da Vinci. I was told that MP4 is again over compressed. and is a delivery codec. It seems that the .mov format with DNxHD may be half of the size of DnxHD which I may be able to handle and a friend advised me that a PNG compression is lossless so I was wondering whether if after I have edited the video that I might save it as Mp4 .PNG and completely discard the DNxHD.mov I don’t know what the best way to save the clips would be nor if they would ever be of use to anyone. If I saved the original as MP4 as you suggest. Would that be a good storage medium for the clips? I would like to stream these videos if possible (for remote family) but I am limited by the ridiculous bandwith of Comcast upload and their gouging. I would appreciate your advice as I am a complete novice but admire beautiful images.

addendum I have been attempting to upload but even the smallest clip exceeds the limits imposed by Cow. 15 seconds comes out as 1/2 Gig
