What format is the audio?
Make sure you have the required codec for that audio installed and that Vegas supports that audio format.

As Gary suggested, WMV is a good way to go. Personally, I use DIVX to encode my videos to share over the internet, but the WMV 9 codec is equivalent to DIVX in file size to video quality capability.
One reason I don’t use .wmv format is because, for me, Vegas renders .wmv files VERY slowly… like 5-10fps where it will render divx files much faster. Not sure if this is an issue with just my computer setup or what.If you’re rendering to a 720×480 frame size (or something in that size range), I’ve found that you’ll want to have bitrate set to at least probably 1.5mb/s. The latest football highlight video I made I used a bitrate of 2mb/s and the 4minute video was approx. 70 MB’s… the quality was just about right with very little artifacting/blotchiness to it.
And like Gary stated, you can use a smaller framesize and a lower bitrate to get your file as small as possible.I’d also suggest using free file hosts like http://www.yousendit.com , http://www.sendspace.com , or http://www.megaupload.com to share your 20MB file rather than emailing it.

I started with Pinnacle Studio as well. It was a good, simple program to start video editing with… but what a beating that program was with crashing/freezing all the time. Starting with Studio is exactly the reason I had no clue what the trimmer was used for until I finally dove in and tried it.

How do you get one clip to be 3 hours long? What tapes are 3 hours long?

I cut highlight clips from football games to make highlight videos with. I used to use a video capture card and just capped the entire football game (sometimes 3.5 hours worth) as 1 big mpeg file. I have all the games on DVD now so none of my videos are over 2 hours each now.
I suppose I could use some type of mpeg splitter and split my large file into smaller files that would be faster to work with.
As far as scrubbing through the timeline, how do you go about scrubbing rapidly? Anytime I’ve tried to just drag the cursor across the timeline its always real slow.
Also, I use the JKL/IO method because 1) I want to see the footage so I don’t miss something I want to edit out and 2) I wind up cutting a small clip (a single play from the game) every few minutes of footage…. so its fairly quick just flying through there looking for the play I want then speeding back up to find another play I want just a short while later.
