  • I placed an example to what I am after.
I guess I am after something as simple as the “Difference Matte” effect, but a more subtle approach of it. Meaning not having those harsh edges, and achieveing something more like a Luma Matte.
I am attaching a short checkerboard example where the highlight that travels has an impact on the underlying layer, it actually feels like it is grabbinbg them like a space/time anomaly 🙂
I’d like to preserve the difference between the layers and reuse it.

  • Thank you all for the replies. The reason for this is completely technical. The result of the animation has to be used on a real time application. Asking the computer to generate true real time add function would result in higher latency. I find it very challenging to find the right path to achieve this result.
It basically means I need the highlight output only where it merged with the underlying image. Don’t use the image’s highlights.

    thanks les,
    but no go.
Object-> path -> join only connects two points, that have only one line coming out of them, together.
Is there a way to make one point have three lines coming out of it ?

Because my problem is that I need three (or more) lines coming out of one point, where the strokes endings won’t be showing on the intersecting part.

If I have say a horizontal line, and a thick line is intersecting it in the middle in ,say, 45 degrees.
If the stroke of that line is big enough, it would show through in the point of intersection which is very ugly.

    Thanks Emily,
I thought Photoshop should have enough support for mask layers as much as it has for the regular layers. After all, they are greyscale images, and can be filtered just like any other image. I figured there might be a non destructive approach to that.
Thanks for your help, I’ll look into the refine edge thing as you suggested 🙂

I need those adjustment layers applied to my mask, not to the image.
A mask applied to an adjustment layer would only determine the affected areas of the adjustment layer, rather than affect the mask itself.

    Hey,
Thanks for replying. The camera is handheld.
What I was trying to get to, is whether this could be accomplished within AE alone.
OR Could it ? (hint: Aharon Rabinowitz (?) :))

    Thanks !

    Hey there ron !
This is quite what I did, but I couldn’t find a way to make the particles follow the path.
Think there is anyway to accomplish this ? Using Flash maybe ? After effects ? 3DSMax ? Maya ?
