I understand your point as an option and sometimes that is the case. At work I use a RAID setup that stores many projects. I can’t take that RAID home. I’d like to still figure out how to deal with this situation.

I went to the Light Iron discussion on the FCP X workflow for the movie “Focus” where Mike Cioni was impressed with FCP X back then. Perhaps when producers and execs realize the shear economic difference of having an FCP X focused workflow, they will more readily jump in. It makes no economic sense not to use FCP X when it comes to the price per frame (as Mike Cioni of Light Iron puts it). There are some scenarios where I still see value in both AVID and Premier Pro/ AE. FCP X isn’t perfect, but the updates have been plenty and keep coming. Leveraging Apple Motion with it to create effects, transitions, generators, etc. for FCP X has been a great workflow help as well.. Third party developers (even casual ones) love it because they can make professional plugins for it just using Motion or their own programming skills.
Granted there are some things that are intangible such as muscle memory and familiarity of the NLE being used, but having used AVID, Premier Pro, DaVinci, and FCP X and have yet to use anything that let’s me freely work as fast and efficiently while maintaining focus on the story as FCP X. Having it at the center of our workflow has been a boon. It’s still an uphill battle for many though because it’s so unfamiliar to the old[er] way of doing things in an NLE.
Change is good though. Competition is good. Keeps us on our toes and continuously learning.

Just a second display to place the event browser on. It sounds like the only way to get this to work is use an HDMI to DVI adapter or use one of the dock’s thunderbolt ports to go to DVI.

The second monitor is an Acer H236HL BID 23″ WIDE LED IPS MONITOR.
Setup is like this:
iMac 5k Retina
Thunderbolt port 1: G-Speed Studio 16TB RAID

There is no HMDI out of the iMac Retina 5K. That’s why I like the dock. It has dedicated HDMI. The thunderbolt ports on the iMac are taken.

Hmmm. The only difference between you and I is you’re going HDMI out to DVI. I am going HDMI out of the dock to HDMI into my second monitor which has both HDMI and DVI.
I can’t believe that I”d have to get an HDMI to DVI cable for this to work.

Match and replace clip with synchronized version.
Sometimes I have to fix other peoples’ edits (they’re still learning FCP X) and they use non-synchronized clips on part of the storyline which means I don’t have access easily to the better audio recorded by the separate device. It takes me a while to find the same frame in the synced clip and replace that on the timeline.
With a little XML knowhow this would seem possible with a simple right-click feature.

Thanks for the input folks and I’ll try lightening the clip load in DaVinci. The reason why I moved to trying DaVinci was because of my experience syncing in general. I suggest taking a look at my post at the link below which has some test details too that I did.
It includes Premiere Pro and Plural Eyes among others for syncing. Definitely think it’s worth a read (or browse).

I just want batch syncing and that would be enough for me right now. I could use more , but that would make my day.
I am so tired of having to go to Plural Eyes, Woowave DreamSync, DaVinci Resolve, and Premiere in order to batch sync. They’re all fine products but neither handles syncing the way I’d want.
It’s annoying to have to leave the app for this feature.
Aside from that:
– Match filename to clip name (like FCP 7) so that in the case of AVCHD clips we can leverage FCP X’s ability to rename clips, but have it actually affect the Finder clip as well.
– Figure out a way to make custom Motion generators not take so darn long to render in FCP X, making the convenience almost pointless sometime.
– Improved Color board (just bake in Color Finale)
– Something like Boris Soundbite, but better and more reliable.
