Rob,
Thanks for the list again–it has grown by one since the last time I downloaded it. I think #1 may be the additional step. However, there is one more at the end, which might be inserted more in the middle, that is the audio mixdown. I had not done that to the program, so it is the only one that I haven’t done several times over. It didn’t change anything and I still can’t play the image. Well, here’s a more exact breakdown of any discrepencies I had when I went through it this time.
4. I learned that if I am on “Image” only, even the still image in the monitor goes away. If I change to “image and Wireframe,” I get the still back.
7. If I change to FW (NTSC) Basic, the system automatically goes back to FW (NTSC).
12. My Sonly DSR-30 deck doesn’t have a menu setting for DV Out OFF. I only have the FW port that says DV In/Out.
Could I have a sticky system somewhere else? I have a Mac G5 with FW into the Sony DSR-30 and cables from it to the external monitor. However, I have other cables there too as my old system is also hooked up to the deck, and it includes a switcher. This setup has worked in the past–which is what really irks me. (I’ve tried all the combinations of switcheer settings too.) Then I didn’t use it for a month because of travel and now I can’t get the picture going again!
I appreciate your patience and help! Susan

I do Spanish all the time. You’ll have to delete and then retype the letters that need accents. You can use any font you want, but you need to memorize the codes. They aren’t that hard once you get going. Use the Option key and the letter that designates the code first, then type the letter over which you want the accent. For example,

Thanks for your response! I did stack the video clips up but found I had to use the overlay composite mode to get the effect that I wanted. I could also change opacity to see the bottom layer.
However, I created a new problem with one of the areas in my sequence where I was trying different effects. One of the clips that I used and then rendered with others and finally deleted continues to appear. A green line appears on the render bar, and even without any clip in the video tracks at all, the original image remains. If I put other images in that area of the timeline, the original (missing) video picutre overlays over the new clip. This is happening to one area of the timeline only, so I can’t use this sequence, Is there a way to break the connection with this clip? I don’t mind starting a new sequence now, but I would like to learn to correct the problem in case it occurs again after I have created a sequence I want to save rather than one where I am practicing.

I don’t have an answer either because I have this problem also. I’ve asked this question too and have had a few answers, but none has worked. In the past someone put together a list of 14 points to check (including All Frames and unchecked square pixels and mirror image), and I’ve done all that and still don’t get the picture. However, I’ve continued to work in FCP. I now have made two shows that I thought I captured in an identical manner, but one will play in the monitor and the other won’t. Furthermore, the one that won’t display on the monitor appears in anamorphic shape with black areas above and below the image while the one that will display appears in 4:3 shape and fills the monitor. This may or may not be a clue, but maybe it will give someone an idea!
I can have both up programs on my computer and flip between them, so I know my cables are hooked up correctly. Both programs were shot in mini-DV and captured with DV-NTSC settings through firewire from my G5 Mac to my Sony DSR-30 deck. The A/V output setting is Apple Firewire NTSC 720×480. I’ve tried checking and unchecking the mirror image box. And All Frames is checked too.
There must be others out there with the same problem, because I’ve seen this question asked before (answers were always some of the 14 points and sometimes they worked). I’m hoping there are yet some more thoughts on the subject!

Oh, thanks! I thought that’s where I was and didn’t realize there were two sites! I just re-posted it! Susan

My Easy Setup is DV-NTSC. I still can’t see the picture in the monitor whether the sq pixels box is checked or not! I am wondering if I’ve got a flaw in the program. Partly because this seemed to start happening in the middle of this latest project and partly because sometimes when I check External Video>All Frames it is checked and sometimes it has reset itself to Off (without my turning FCP off and then back on). Also, when I click All Frames, I briefly see pixels for a flash of a picture and then the picture goes away. The flash is so brief, I can’t quite tell if the picture is of my current program frame or something else.
I appreciate your thoughts! Susan

Good idea, and perhaps you’ve nailed it! I certainly hope so, because it’s such a simple fix. Here is what I see. When “Show as square pixels” is unchecked, the picture looks like letterbax and is the one I’m concerned about. When the box IS checked, the image changes to a more square aspect, but still has small black bands at the top and bottom. Furthermore, the picture doesn’t quite fill the entire Canvas frame on the sides either. Perhaps this is not a problem, as the aspect looks right now. I also have “Fit to Window” checked for size, which is putting it at 46%. When I change it to 50%, the image fills the window with the slightest of black borders all the way around. Interestingly enough, the other show, the one that shows up correctly (and made very good DVDs), has the “Show as square pixels” box checked and at “Fit to Window” it perfectly fills the Canvas window.
Ithink you’ve solved my problem! so many thanks! I don’t know if I need to know why the two shows have slightly different sizes.
Now, if I could just figure out how to view this in my monitor, life would be sweet!

Oliver,
Thanks for your reply. It helped me take a closer look at what I’d done. Turned out that missing the navigation settings was only part of my problem. I did not assign overlays for highlighting to the buttons and that’s keeping me from being able to tell where I am wen I play the similator. Secondly, I didn’t pay attention to names i assigned to buttons so that the Button Inspector came up with a bizarre selection of choices. In other words, the program is working but I couldn’t tell what it was doing so it was appearing to me not to work. I think I can sort it out now if I add highlights to the buttons. You got me on the right path!
