    First of all. THANK YOU all for your input, ideas and suggestions.

    I have been sidetracked on a job, and have not been able to get back to the thorough testing I was hoping to yet. But plan on setting the next couple of days aside to do just that.

    To answer a few questions: The ARECA RAID got filled with about 12TB of DPX files at a scanning facility that offloaded the DPX scans from their SAN to the ARECA RAID via a Thunderbolt connection between the ARECA RAID and a Fiber connected Mac Pro.

    As has already been answered, the Controller card is built into the mTAPE. So currently I am dealing with essentially a hardware RAID controller inside the free standing Thunderbolt ARECA RAID, and a Thunderbolt controller card inside the mTape.

    I have currently transferred around 4 TB to an external USB 3 drive in preparation for tests backing from that drive to the mTape while taking the ARECA RAID offline.

    Right now I am testing: BRU PE, PreRoll Post, and YoyottaID LTFS.

    Right before I got pulled away from this task, the last thing I did was try Yoyotta (since the 2 other systems would not let me get through 1 tape successfully- this was prior to receiving an update from the gentlemen at BRU).

    I can report that YoyottaID did allow me to offload to the mTape from the ARECA RAID without any crashes (Martin thanks for the assistance!). However, the current offload speed seems quite unpredictable. All of my DPX frames are the same size : 55MB/frame. Yet, with verification turned on. One tape offloaded around 200GB/h, the next dropped down to 125GB/h, then the following was back up to 195GB/h…. but they did offload without hanging or crashing the system. I watched the tape and noticed it take several pauses, then restart itself. At one point, it even spit out the tape by itself, re-ingested it by itself, and kept offloading… All of this is probably adding to the erratic offload speeds.

    I plan on trying these same files one more time with PreRollPost and the new build of BRU PE I got from Tolis and will report back.

    Thanks for the info Tim!

    In this case, the ARECA Raid controller card is in the free standing 8 Bay RAID Drive chassis (not inside the cylinder Mac Pro which does not accept PCIe cards obviously). Does this advice still apply? The RAID drive chassis is connected to the Mac Pro via Thunderbolt. Are they recommending that I remove the case from the RAID Drive chassis to expose the drives and card? Thanks for clarifying.

    I did download the latest drivers from mTape. I could not find a special one, there is only one driver on mTape’s website…

    I contacted tech support at BRU and so far was only told to make sure I have the latest drivers…

    that’s getting pretty old 😉

    Here’s the thing though. I simply finished the grade in the timeline. Watched back to see that all the image stabilization work was good. Saved. Exited. Opened a new timeline. Did some work there. Saved. Came back to my image stabilization timeline just to render it out and the work I had done was gone. I would understand a Basemem clearing this out, but I hadn’t touched anything I that sequence!
    Here’s a simple question. When looking at the timeline in the Color window, how can I tell which clip has Image Stabilization applied to it to verify if it is still working on the clips I did ? (other than to manually watch them all one by one ?) is there an icon? A color bar? Anything to indicate that that particular clip does contain image stabilization? I know this exists for object tracking, but can’t find it for image stabilization…

  • My CUDA-Z performance specs match yours exactly. Except that my GT120 says 1400 MHz and yours says 1500 MHz. Shouldn’t really matter as it’s GUI only..

    This is really strange…

    Did you check what lane speed your GT120 was set to?
    Shouldn’t matter but it’s the only thing I can think of…

    For my RED tests, I am using 4K R3Ds recorded in 2:1.

    I have now run a series of tests and this is what I get with:
    285 Plugged into Slot 1 (16x)
    GT120 Plugged into Slot 3 (4x)
    RAID into Slot 2 (1x)
    Black Magic into Slot 4 (4x)

    ProRes444 clips playback in resolve at 17-18 fps (at 1920×1080 8bit)
    RED R3D clips playback in resolve at 17-18 fps (1/4 Res. Good, 8 bit)
    RED R3D Clips playback in resolve at 10 fps (1/2 Res. Good, 8bit)
    RED R3D Clips playback in resolve at 5 fps (1/2 Res. Good, 10 bit)

    I tried plugging the monitors into the GT120, got an error message saying it would not be optimal, but it ran anyway.

    What was interesting was that the ProRes444 dropped to 10 fps. But the R3D only dropped to 16fps (1/4 Res. Good). Which seems to lend credence to the fact that the R3D speed is not as dependent on the card as one would think…

    Either way, I am not able to achieve 24fps in either ProRes or R3D…

    This has been very useful.

    Seems like I have the same specs as you.

    The main difference seems to be in the placing of the Cards within the slots.

    On my Mac 2,1, if I were to place the GTX285 in Slot 1, and the GT120 in Slot 2, the only option for the GTX set at 16x in slot 1, would be to run the GT120 at 1x. (looking at the Expansion Slot Utility).

    Do you think you could have been running your GT120 at x1 speed?

    If not, if I set SLot 1 to 16x, the only other 8x slot is in Slot 4. But that would not fit with your scenario of being in SLot 2.

    My other thought is that I can set Slot 1 to 8x for the GTX285 and Slot 2 to 8x for the GT120…. but I don’t know that that would be right….

    Thanks for the quick reply. I got my cards from Dave after reading your recommendation. He was really nice to deal with.

    It seems the only difference in our setup is where you are placing the GT120 (8x) instead of my (4x).

    What process are you using to check if the cards are running properly?

    Would love to check that…

    I really need video output so I can’t really put my Gt120 in 8x mode…
