Thanks for your answers, Angelo.
I now have the R3D files without timecodes as well as the edited MOV file with the timecodes (as shown in the screencap in my original post). How do I replace the timecoded files with the non-timecoded files? What exactly do I need? The film was edited in Final Cut Pro and I have Premiere Pro. I don’t have the FCP or an XML file yet. What do I need to ask for?

Thanks, Darby. You’re a star! That works quite well. I hoped there was a way to keep my layer going straight up and down but I could not figure it out. Much appreciated. I ended up finishing another project because this one is taking a lot of time. Funny how that works. Now it will go more smoothly. I appreciate your time.

Aha, I figured out how to make a vertical slideshow. Modifying a tutorial by Andrew Kramer, I used the Sequence.jsx script from the Shatterize tutorial on videocopilot.net.
If anyone is interested, I can give the full step-by-step directions.

Does ANYONE have a step-by-step tutorial? I spent a lot of time trying to use the resources but my skill level is not advanced enough, which is why I’m posting in the beginner’s thread. If someone has the ability to create a tutorial, I would be eternally grateful. I have looked and looked and have not found anything specific. There are lots of people asking and unfortunately I’m not sure a tutorial exists.

December 11, 2010 at 3:05 am in reply to: Best way to add transition effects – Workflow questionHi again, Andrew. I tried your Mocha tutorial and I did get further than before but couldn’t figure out how to track faster motion. I have a character running back and forth across the scene with a relatively stable background. The contrast is high but the tracking doesn’t follow the motion, not even in one direction. Is there a different setting or button that will help? I played around a bit on my own but had no luck. Thanks again for your tutorial though as I’m sure it will help with some shots…but usually my footage moves faster than the boat in your example. 🙂

Thank you so much for your response, Michael. I had seen some of those resources but hadn’t tried that search feature you linked to. That’s a great mega-resource! I will poke around through those although some of them looked like they required a lot of expressions and I don’t have a great programming mind. When I’m learning something new I like a lot of hand-holding, but maybe it’s time to jump into the deep end! I managed to make some fairy dust but frankly it looks very lame and amateurish. That’s why I like step-by-step tutorials because the results are usually very polished and professional looking. If you find one that is very specific, do let me know please. In the meantime, I will try to put together something from the bits and pieces out there. I still have not found anything as comprehensive as I’d like, such as the tutorials here on Creative Cow and Video Copilot. That’s what I’m really hoping for this Christmas!

December 8, 2010 at 11:46 pm in reply to: Best way to add transition effects – Workflow questionThanks for your help, Dave and Andrew! I appreciate your support of a newbie like myself.
Dave, do you have any tutorials on the presets and templates and what they do? I have played with some of them by clicking them but sometimes it’s hard to figure them out on my own. Although I’m a Microsoft software whiz, AE is so powerful that I have trouble finding ways to do things efficiently. I am going through the Lynda tutorials systematically to build a strong foundation, and also using tutorials to reach specific goals and I also think of new ways to use the tutorials which is the idea behind them I believe. I like to take everything to the next level.
Andrew, thanks for your generosity in sharing your knowledge! I will be doing your tutorial in the next day or two. I have to admit I’ve not had much luck with Mocha previously. I tried two other tutorials in the past and both times something didn’t work. I’m very excited about my third attempt though. I have a very optimistic disposition, LOL!

December 6, 2010 at 11:24 pm in reply to: Best way to add transition effects – Workflow questionThanks Andrew. I like your accent! The tutorial I watched, Dynamic Link for the Premiere Pro Workflow, is very helpful for adding text effects but I don’t see how it could apply to transitions in AE. If you have any additional advice or tutorials I would appreciate it.
Specifically, several friends are using Final Cut Pro and Final Cut Studio to do cool transitions that will move across and/or blur just the subject and not the whole clip and have a light flash to the heavy beats of the music. How can I do these things in AE? I can do it meticulously by hand but I would like to find more efficient ways to work. Once I learn how they did it, I will be better prepared to come up with my own ideas for effective transitions. I love using special effects and can blow their vids out of the water in that department, but my transitions leave something to be desired. I know that in many cases simple cuts are best, but for music videos I want some razzle dazzle!

That did the trick. Thanks, Ann!

I cut mine into 10-15 minute segments.
