Having spent most of this decade working as an editor to some degree or other on everything from Speed Razor to Avid, i recently took both the 101 and 300 courses. Even with a lot of edit time and quite a bit of time spent on FCP, 101 is a lot of course for 3 short days.
Luckily, i had a really good instructor in Chris Roberts at the NTI in Birmingham (UK). As he also frequently works as an editor he approached the course from that angle, not only covering the contents of the course but the practical and real world reasons behind them. The course was still tough though as there is a huge amount of facts and figures to learn and more short cuts than you think your brain can cope with- your head will feel like it’s about to pop by day 3.
What i have found is that lots of that data and those short cuts have stuck in my brain and become almost automatic while editing. My work process has improved and i feel much more comfortable with the software, I really don’t want to edit on Avid ever again please!
Like the other posts have mentioned, you won’t learn how to edit, that’s a skill that is much harder to learn, but you should have a much better knowledge of how the drive the software.
