two ways:

1st, build your photoshop file bigger you need … how big your effect should be … and dont import the photoshop file with layersized borders
but with the real size of the file.

2nd way would be to make a sub composition from your letter (layer) and
to make the sub comp a little bit bigger. then … back in your comp.
try to use the effect to the sub comp.
