I’ve used the smuggler one time and had good results but, like Bill said, it’s not good for run and gun. I use a carry-on bag for everyday. On a plane, I usually put it in the overhead on my jacket or airline blanket. People see it and don’t get near it, usually. Sometimes it travels under the seat in front of me with a battery, tape and mic ready to go. You never know…
A few years back (12), I went to Iowa for PetSmart to shoot an interview and the airline lost my baggage including my tripod and mic. I had a battery and tape with me so I was able to use a barstool chair for stix, a garage light and used the on camera mic to get my interview done. Now, I travel with my necessities on my person and my clothes go in the camera bag.
The airlines have been my worst night mare. I could tell 20 horror stories.
That smuggler is still the best for on board the plane though. We just bought a small Sony EX-1 so it’s getting easier even though you have to give up a little camera functionality.

You are living in an area that is tumbling in economic times. My wife is from Detroit and the financial situation is not looking good.
Because we don’t know what you specialize in, maybe you can give us some background so we can brainstorm with you.
The posters above have already given you some excellent advice but everyone’s situation is different. We had a slump last summer that was brutal for us. We then decided to call all of our clients and ask what we could do to help promote their businesses and increase their sales. It took a few months but then we took off like a rocket (sorta). We are having one of our best Januaries ever and February is looking ok so far.

That smuggler is probably the best case for what you do. Because of the weight of the lens, it’s really hard on the mount when the camera travels with the lens hanging off of the front of it.
And a note here: Last year, I was traveling cross country with one of our Sony DSR-300s, a shoulder mount DVCAM. We had a small plane for part of the trip and there was no where for the camera to reside. The delightful flight attendant told me that it had to travel below but they would be especially careful with it. When we landed and they retrieved my camera, the viewfinder was completely ripped from it’s mount. I filed a claim and their response was that they are not responsible for camera gear and that I should have packed it better. (U.S. Airways)
Of course, this turned into a pissing match as I said that I always carry it with me and they took it from my safe keeping and promised to treat it gently. They also dropped a tripod on it’s head (soft case) and the wedge plate is impossible to slide in and out.Good luck with that.

Both of our Intel macs are dual core but not “core 2 duo”. The browser works on our laptop and we’ve ordered FCP 6. I see that the requirement is Core 2 Duo. This would indicate that the Sony software only works on the very latest Macs? (not referring to and Windows machines, here) It seems odd that Sony would dismiss everyone else.

Chapter 7 means that everything is gone and there is little chance of collecting anything. People could file a class action suite but the chance of any lawyer taking that case is slim.
Bad news for everyone. Unless … someone can prove that this was a corporate conspiracy as in Enron.

Find a MV that you want yours to look like and examine every frame.

Because we do have a deck, we get a number of people who have us digitize their footage and lay it to a portable storage of some type. Then, they take it wherever and possibly transfer it to a faster, heavier duty unit. Some bring X-Serve raids, others have SATA or even a Maxtor for the really small stuff.
I’m not so sure that I would buy a deck at this time. A lot of deliverables are Sony HDCAM. Panasonic is selling a LOT of cameras, both in tape and P-2. We just bought two Sony EX-1 HD cameras. I am writing this as I’m transferring a days footage to hard drive.
Quite frankly, the solid state recording thing just scares the hell out of me.
The only reason that we own an HDCAM deck is because we shoot and edit our own HDCAM projects. If I were a post house, I would partner with a someone and split the debt someway. I also offer a “lay back” price of $150 if someone just needs to lay a project to tape as well as some other enticing offers.
