    [Nick Griffin] “”Book of Wargo-isms.””

Thanks Nick. It’s actually called either “Wargonisms” (like organisnms) or “Wargasms” (like orgasms) and I’ve been working on it for a year. Probably another year to go. Remember, I’m an x-hard core biker and I have quite a few. One of then is the definition of “Quick Chick”.

    Your copy will be free.

Meet people. Lots of people. Let people know that you are available to fill in for others. You are not a threat to the top people, but you are a threat to the lower people.

We have a local group that is hosted right here on the COW. Although I am not an FCP editor, I own four stations and I hire others to run them. I have a great creative guy and a second string editor that is happy with being in second place and we have occasional interns. Sometimes we travel and I need to take an editor with me while my entire staff stays behind at the office.

Have a business card with your photo and only crucial info. It must have a url to your reel.

Your website should be a resume and lot of clips that are your best work.

Get a name badge that says Audrey Weller, Editor/Compositor, FCP, AVID, AE. This will be an ice breaker and people will ask about your skills and experience.

And remember one very important thing: Your profession is Editing and Composition but your actual job is “Selling your skills to those who will hire you”.

We do not hire smokers. They are bad for business.

    Matt

What would it take to get a sample disc? I have people ask about copy protection quite often, and I also get requests for closed captions on HDCAM feature films.

We had a really official sticker made that said “This program is protected by the Interpol Copy Protection System. We are not responsible for any damage to your VCR during any attempt to copy this program”.

    Worked like a charm.

Macrovision had a minimum quantity and then ended up around a buck a copy to use. We could just run the signal through an MX-50 switcher and it stripped the Macrovision away.

    Aaron,

Most people who are miserable at work are miserable because they don’t deal with their problems properly. Many are too meek and timid to discuss anything with their employer and the problems become unbearable over time. If you’re working for someone that you can’t talk to, it’s always best to move somewhere you can.

Good luck and keep on chugging

[jon agnew] “I was looking for a way to tell her that she will be decreasing the productivity for which our boss pays us so handsomely.”

Sorry I chimed in so late but my suggestion would be to ask her what to do on Everything. And stop working completely when you do. Quit working, turn to her, lean back in your chair and get completely relaxed. Then discuss the theory behind each cut. Ask her questions that are over her head. Start conversations about unrelated things. Apologize for being distracted. Tell her it’s nice to have someone to talk to throughout the day as it cuts the boredom. Start smoking and take a smoke break every 15 minutes. When she has a suggestion, call someone else to get a second opinion. Develop a urinary tract infection. Go the bathroom a lot and talk to her about it.

At least that’s what my editors do when I invade their space.

Sorry Mark. I was speaking to Mr. Cadieux. I forgot to quote his post, as I often do. I forget that my reply is not connected to the original post.

    My apologies.

[Jeremy Doyle] “He’d be much happier on his own.”

Cry baby whiners are just that, cry baby whiners. They are never happy.

Aaron needs to find out what it’s like to be responsible for everything. All he sees is the icing on the cake.

There are a lot of very talented people out there who would not survive as business owners for more than a month or so. It’s not about owning a computer and raking in the bucks. Your specialty has to be owning and managing a business, not being the world’s best editor. Editing does not make money. Investing, negotiating and collecting makes the money.

I think you need to quit your job before making statements like you just did. I you worked for me, I would not allow you back in the building, EVER!
