My business card says “Steve Wargo, D.E.”

The DE stands for “Does Everything” and while everybody laughs, I just stare at them till they stop laughing and hire me to do something – anything.

We rented one of our EX-1s to Sony Pictures (go figure) for the TV pilot S.I.S. It was used for all car interior shots and some gunfight scenes. “A” camera was a Viper.

I agree with Nick and should have clarified earlier. If it’s selecting shots, it’s editing. If it’s typing in a cut list and walking away while the machine works, it’s something less. This is where the second system rule comes in. If you’ve only got one system, you can’t penalize the client because you don’t have enough of the proper tools. Well, you can. But that’s only gonna last till they figure it out.

We charge 65% of hourly for capture. And $1.50 a minute for layback, plus a setup charge.

Use one screw for now. Many times, heads come with extra screws. Most Manfrotto/Bogen heads come with two 1/4″ screws and two 3/8″ screws. The spares are mounted on the underside of the head.

[nick hasson] “I walked away with 1100 bucks.”

Wow! Someone that actually made $1,100.

I have done several of these and the check you get up front might be the only check you’ll ever see. Find the crookedest lawyer you can and have them write your contract.

Nick did the smart thing. On one project I worked on in he early years, the director changed the name of the film and all contracts were rendered void. There’s a thousand ways to skin a cat and a thousand more ways to skin you. Be careful.

Sam Rami did the same to his college buddies but he is an honest guy and the loyal guys made it big and they’re still with him. That’s what I would do and I can’t be the only guy who’s honest.

I would have come in with the same $5k as Grinner. Most often, I first ask what they have for a budget. Half the time, it’s “I don’t have any idea” and the other half tells me what they’ve got. I start with a personal conversation in which I talk about all that goes into the project, the man hours involved and the level of skill involved. Once they realize that it’s not such a simple task, they start to understand the price.

I’ve commented on that “per finished minute” thing a few times. We just did a national, 2 minute spot with 38 layers of graphics for around $12k, followed by a very nice 2 hour event video for $4500. Where does the finished minute theory come in on those two?

Most often, we just hash it out and agree on a price that we’re all happy with. Most often, I show them samples of past projects and go from there.

We live with our ARRI 300/650 kit. Before the great cameras of today, you had to have 1K lights but I never use them any more. If I do, I use a Lowel Tota. The 300/650 kit runs around $2500.

You can make dimmers using Lutron dimmers and Home Depot pieces.
