Join a peer group in New York and once you get friendly with some of the members, ask this question. “So, how much do you charge”? If you’re really good at what you both do, charge more. If you aren’t that good, charge less.

February 22, 2010 at 6:56 am in reply to: My battle with the boom shadow

Well, when we do a lighting setup, we ask the sound guy if he is booming or doing something else. But, our sound guy is right there with us, not dropping in at roll time and telling us we have a problem. He must be there during the set-up.

Set-up is when some sound people (and other crew) are on the phone or smoking somewhere. Then, they show up last minute and cause problems. We dump them after the second problem. Also, I don’t hire smokers for this very reason, regardless of the fact that their breathe makes me want to puke. But that’s another subject.

We give them 30 days and then promise to delete it, which we never do because the moment you do, the phone will ring and it will be them wanting to know if they can book a week, at full rate, for editing the old footage. If you keep it on the drive, they will NEVER call.

I apologize Herb. I thought my post was so ridiculous that it was obviously a joke. Next time I’ll put a smiley face on the end or do this >> (This Post Was Meant to be Funny. Please Don’t Take it Seriously)

By the way, this post was meant to be just a bit sarcastic.

Well, there won’t be any glasses. The technology is polorized imaging and all you’ll have to do is hang a sheet of the plastic stuff from the ceiling between you and the $9000 set so you’re looking through it no matter where you’re at. That will eliminate the dumb glasses, for sure.

If you ditch this guy, something better will come along. Take one day that you were going to spend on this project and GO FIND a paying client.

January 24, 2010 at 6:26 am in reply to: Owning the raw footage

I’m with you Scott – UNLESS there are some circumstances which require a different approach.

Like I said earlier, “If they pay me to shoot it, they own it.”

This statement does NOT cover talent issues, creative files, music or any other “accessories”. It the raw footage only.
