While it took me quite awhile to begin to grasp how it works, Avid FX (Boris Red) is an amazing tool for Media Composer effect filters and transitions. With some basic training–which I did on my own via many on-line tutorials (thanks so much Kevin P McAuliffe and others!) and a lot of experimentation–you can literally create any transition or filter effect you want for Media Composer. I have created dozens. What would really be great is if someplace like CreativeCow would dedicate a space where editors can share their creations, to build a library far superior to what one can find for FCP. If something like this is feasible, I would be most happy to share my creations with others.

For those new to Avid FX willing to give it a go on their own — big tip — Shut off that damn RED KEY!

Thanks, but when I do that, it just squeezes the picture to fill the frame which only works when it’s the proper aspect ration. Problem is I use all types of image sizes and aspect ratios. If I pull in a still that is higher than wide, it will stretch it to fit the image using the “Fit to Project Size” option.

I know people have said to reformat it in Photoshop or some other external program, but I don’t have time for something like that. A lot of the editing I do is crash editing.

Thanks so much for responding. Where would I find “a setting that automatically scales all of your imported stills to the project resolution”? That would definitely be a solution for me but I cannot find a way to do that.

Thanks so much for responding Terence. Your idea helps a lot and I am sure I’ll make use of it in the near future, but it doesn’t quite do what I’m for.

I want to take the image in the animatte and move it-say-off screen. Problem doing it this way is that the key hole doesn’t move with the image in it.

I did try moving the collapsed effect up a track, leaving an empty one between it and the background. Didn’t work. But are you saying when I collapse the effect I should have an empty track under it?

    Thanks

Thanks for your help. What if I’m mixing HD and SD with an HD output?

    Wow,

I really appreciate all the advice sent my way. Another question, since I am using a lot of crappy video from the web, I’m keeping everything in a smaller box over a clean background. Right now I’m doing it 4:3. Is there a simple way to change to 16:9 if I choose to do so later?

If I check the anamorphic 16:9 box it distorts the video. Can I copy the layer of boxed video to a new 16:9 sequence without running into lots of rendering?

I have a 16:9 version of the background.

    Thanks
